Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1899 a German cavalry officer, Max von Stephanitz, purchased a dog from a local shepherd that was to start the breed. What was the name of this dog?

Answer: Hektor Linkrshein

The original dog that von Stephanitz purchased was named Hektor Linkrshein and was renamed by him to Horand vom Grafrath. The vom Grafrath comes from a property purchased by von Stephanitz sometime in the 1890's. Hektor von Shwaben was Horand's son, and Heinz von Starkenburg was in turn sired by Hektor.

When von Stephanitz started the SV, Verein fur Deutscher Schaferhunde, Horand was given the number SV1. The SV is the original breed club for the GSD.
2. How often do German Shepherds moult ( shed )?

Answer: Always

The best quote that I have seen is that Shepherds only moult once a year, but for 365 days. There will not be a time when your house is free of dog hair if you own a Shepherd.
3. At the end of WWI the name of the breed, in the UK at least, was changed. What was the new name?

Answer: Alsatian Wolf Dog

The original 'new' name for the breed was the Alsatian Wolf Dog. The Alsatian part came from the area of Alsace-Lorraine, and the Wolf dog came from its looks. Later, the Wolf Dog was dropped because it was felt that it would have as much of a detrimental affect as the 'German' part of the name.
4. Vestibular syndrome affects which sense of the GSD?

Answer: Balance

Vestibular disease affects the dogs balance. It is a disease that can come from a problem in either the ear or the brain. More information can be obtained from the UK German Shepherd Dog Helpline :

http://www.gsdhelpline.com/vest.htm
5. The GSD was originally bred to do which task?

Answer: Herding

The very first Shepherds were bred from working sheepdogs, and for many years this was their primary role. Von Stephanitz recognised that herding was dying out in Germany and so began to breed and train the dogs for their other abilities. It was during WWI that their qualities as a 'general working' dog were seen to shine.

In the UK, America and Australia the abilities of the breed to take on almost any task asked of them was soon recognized.
6. Within the UK Kennel Club, to which group do Shepherds belong?

Answer: Pastoral

Shepherds are Pastoral dogs. This group does not seem to exist outside of the UK. In the US they are in the Herding group and in Australia they are classed as 'Working dogs'. A Pastoral breed is one that was originally bred to herd cattle, sheep, reindeer and other cloven hoofed animals.

The group first appeared in the UK in 1999 when the KC split the Working group because it had grown too large.
7. The white GSD was first banned from the show ring by the AKC.

Answer: False

The white shepherd was first banned by the Nazi Party in Germany in 1933, when it took over the SV, Verein fur Deutscher Schaferhunde, from von Stephanitz. Other dog groups followed suit over the next 30 years or so.
8. There are three coat types recognised by The Kennel Club. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Short coat

What many people call a short coat is, in fact, classified as medium smooth by The Kennel Club. Because of the diminished weather proofing of both the long smooth and long coat, they are classified by The Kennel Club as 'undesirable'.
9. Which of the listed conditions is not a major health concern with the German Shepherd?

Answer: C E A

CEA is the abbreviation for collie eye anomaly and, as the name suggests, mainly affects the collie breeds. Hip dysplasia is a, mainly, inherited problem affecting the hip joint. Gastric torsion, sometimes called Bloat, is caused by too much gas or fluid in the stomach which can cause the stomach to partially rotate. Anal furunculosis, or Perianal fistula, is a distressing condition around the anal area. If not treated it can spread to the rear legs and flanks.
10. What is the breed called in Germany?

Answer: Deutscher Schaferhund

Deutscher Schaferhund is where the name German Shepherd Dog comes from. As previously mentioned, Alsatian was a name made up after WWI. The other two translate as the German Police Dog and the Workers Dog. Neither name exists.
