Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Despite the common name "grey wolf," which color is the most common colors for the species, accounting for about one third of all individuals?

Answer: brown

Black emerges primarily in forested regions, and white is most common in arctic regions as white wolves thrive best where they can be hidden by the snow. However, a mixed set of browns is the most common color of wolf fur.
2. In what areas of the world are wolves the largest?

Answer: high northern latitudes

Like many wide-ranging animals, wolves are largest in Arctic regions, as are their prey. The bison that wolves hunt in Canada and the United States are largest in northern Canada as well. The prey the Siberian wolves hunt is also large and so are they.
3. The alpha wolf in a pack is always male?

Answer: False

Because of an improper observation on a pack of wolves, it was long-believed that wolves were led by a powerful and forceful member of the pack dominating the others. Observations have shown however that wolf packs have two alphas, one male and one female, usually the parents of the younger wolves they have bred - in other words, a family unit with younger wolves of varying ages.
4. Although wolves usually flee from people, attacks on humans occasionally occur. In what season is this most likely to happen?

Answer: summer

Though prey can be scarce in winter, humans rarely encounter wolves in the winter, so most attacks happen when humans are active in the wilderness, particularly in summer.
5. A charming quirk of wolf behavior is that a certain weather event triggers a major urge to play in wolves. What weather event is it?

Answer: snow

Surviving in many breeds of domesticated dog, wolves often are elated by snow and the whole pack is rather playful when it snows.
6. Wolves sometimes have trouble finding food in the winter, but they have many advantages that aid them in hunting during the winter. Which is NOT one of them?

Answer: superior color vision

Like dogs, wolves have fewer cone cells in their eyes. They are not completely color-blind (dogs also see some color) but they do not see colors as vividly as many other animals. The other options do help the wolves when hunting.
7. In a two mile race, a grey wolf would easily beat a sailfish and a cheetah.

Answer: True

A cheetah is unquestionably the fastest sprinter on land, but it can only sprint a couple of hundred yards before it must rest for several hours. A sailfish can swim faster than a cheetah can run and it can swim at this speed farther than a cheetah. However, it is also a sprinter and could only go a small fraction of the way at this speed.

A grey wolf can run at about 25 mph for up to two miles. Because it can keep up a fast speed, though not as fast as either a cheetah or sailfish, it would easily reach the two mile distance long before the other two animals.
8. Which of these is NOT a primary reason for the grey wolf's stamina?

Answer: friction-reducing fur

Wolves must often move with their prey and their hunts often involve outrunning and outmaneuvering prey. In this, they have adapted to have a number of features that aid them in running and running for long periods.
9. Snow does not melt on wolf fur.

Answer: False

Wolf fur is one of the best insulators there is, and a wolf is more at risk of overheating than freezing, but enough body heat does escape to melt snow on its fur. It may be a slow process, though.
10. Wolves generally hunt deer by getting one to run into an ambush and then dragging it down. How do wolves usually hunt bison?

Answer: in the same way, usually by trapping a weak or sick animal

Bison are dangerous prey, and all of these techniques have been observed, but for the most part, wolves hunt these animals the same way they would hunt any other prey.
