Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An average German Shepherd dog can exert 750lbs of pressure per square inch of jaw. How much pressure can a wolf's jaws exert per square inch?

Answer: 1500lbs

This is part of the reason that it can be dangerous to own a wolf-dog hybrid. A bite from one of these animals could be extremely dangerous. They can seem like wonderful and loyal pets but they will remain innately wild and can therefore be highly unpredictable.
2. Which of the following wolves are typically the smallest?

Answer: Arabian Wolf (Canis lupus arabs)

The male Arabian Wolf generally tends to weigh around 40lbs, while the other subspecies tend to weigh anything from 70-130lbs, although animals as large as 170lbs or more have been recorded.
3. What, approximately, is the average birth weight of a wolf pup?

Answer: One pound

They average about six per litter and open their eyes after roughly one week. A week after that they often start to explore the world outside the den a little.
4. What was the name of the large species of wolf native to North America that became extinct roughly ten thousand years ago?

Answer: Dire wolf

The first dire wolf fossils were found on the banks of the Ohio River. These wolves were around twenty percent larger than most living species of grey wolf.
5. Approximately how much meat does an adult wolf need to consume each day to remain healthy?

Answer: Two and a half pounds

This is the equivalent of roughly eighteen adult deer per wolf each year. However, this amount increases to roughly five pounds per day in female wolves who are pregnant or lactating.
6. Over approximately what distance can wolf howls be heard, provided there are no obstructions, such as hills or mountains, in the way?

Answer: Up to ten miles

Although this obviously depends a great deal on the terrain, weather conditions and other variables, wolf howls have been heard as much as ten miles away from their source before.
7. During the wolf's peak in North America, how many wolves is it estimated lived in the continent?

Answer: 400,000

The central plains of North America were teeming with prey some ten thousand or more years ago and some areas of the continent may have supported one wolf per six square miles.
8. Roughly how long ago is it estimated that the first wolf was domesticated?

Answer: 15,000 years

Wolves are thought to have been the first wild animals to be domesticated. Recent genetic testing seems to confirm that the domestic dog did evolve from the wolf.
9. In what year were wolves given full protection in America under the Endangered Species Act?

Answer: 1973

Although illegal shooting and snaring continued for some time afterwards, and almost definitely still does to some extent.
10. During which century did wolves become extinct in England?

Answer: 15th

England exterminated its last wolf in 1486, followed by Scotland in 1743 and Ireland in 1776. However, there is ongoing research into the possibility of re-introducing wolves into Scotland in small numbers at some stage in the future.
