Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a major rank of wolf in a pack?

Answer: sigma

The alpha wolf is the leader of a wolf pack and the beta is the alpha wolf's right hand. The omega wolf is the lowest ranking member of the pack.
2. What is the primary purpose of an omega wolf in the pack?

Answer: to relieve stress

While the omega wolf may take on the job of watching cubs or may patrol with the rest of the pack, they primarily serve as a stress outlet for the rest of the pack. They often do this by initiating play. If you have a playful dog at home that always wants to play, it is because centuries of domestication have led many dogs to automatically see themselves as omega members of their families.
3. While we're still talking about the omega wolves, what torment do they not have to face?

Answer: physical harm from other pack members

The omega wolf of any pack is generally harassed, chased, and starved when the pack falls on hard times, but despite the ferocious reputation of wolves, there is little violence within a pack, even to the omega.
4. When wolves howl separately, they are communicating their positions to one another. What does it mean when an entire pack howls together?

Answer: They are declaring their dominance of an area.

Wolves often work by stealth when they hunt, so startling prey by means of howling would be counterproductive. It is not currently believed that wolves grieve. Also, the mating generally stays within the pack.
5. During mating season, the alpha wolf and his mate are unusually harsh and violent to the rest of the pack. Why?

Answer: The stress prevents the other wolves from mating.

Animals under severe stress stop producing hormones necessary for reproduction. The violence is not severe enough to cause any deaths, but the fact that only one pair of wolves in each pack breeds means that the pack does not get too large, too fast.
6. If one were to encounter a wolf pack while hiking most times during the year, what is the most likely reaction the pack would have?

Answer: It would run away.

In reality, wolves are very easily frightened and avoid humans and places where humans tend to be. Only when the pack is on the verge of utter starvation will they become bold enough to attack a human being.
7. The grey wolf, the most common and widespread wolf, is found on every continent except which of these?

Answer: Australia

Wolves were once common in Europe as well as East Asia and North America, but have been hunted to extinction except for a few regions. One of the most interesting is the wolves of Romania, which travel to the cities at night and dig through garbage for food, much as the urban foxes of England do.
8. Which wolf species, native to the southeastern United States, was long believed to be a hybrid and thus, did not receive protection from the "Endangered Species Act" until the 1970s?

Answer: Red wolf

As far as I know, there is no such thing as an American jackal or a panhandle fox. The red wolf was long believed to be a hybrid of wolf and coyote, though coyotes are not wolves at all.
9. These African wolves have no large prey to hunt so they are organized a little differently than other types of wolves, with a family gathering a large number of small prey and bringing them to a "queen?"

Answer: Ethiopian wolves

Ethiopian wolves mostly hunt small creatures like rats and other rodents. They are led by a queen who produces the cubs for the pack. They are notably smaller than most other wolf species and are much thinner.
10. Which of these creatures is an extinct wolf species?

Answer: Dire wolf

The white wolf and the timber wolf are both names for the grey wolf, which is very much alive and well today. The Tasmanian wolf wasn't even a canine, let alone a wolf species. It was in fact, a marsupial. Dire wolf is the popular name given to the prehistoric wolves that were far larger than the wolves of today.
