Beware of the Dog Trivia Quiz

There is a challenge in the Author's Lounge with the title, "Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign". It must have been on my mind because I kept seeing the sign, "Beware of the Dog" on my daily walk through my village. So I wrote a quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My friend, Sally the Alsatian, left her bed in the shade to come bounding over to me. Her tongue hung out as I reached to scratch behind her fluffy ears. What breed, often shortened to three letters, is protected by this "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: GSD

The German Shepherd Dog or Alsatian is also known as Alsatian wolf dog, Berger Allemand, Deutscher schäferhund, GSD and schäferhund (according to Wikipedia).

As the name suggests, the breed originated in Germany. These large dogs are considered ideal working dogs due to their intelligent curiosity. They are strong, active dogs and need experienced handlers. I have known Sally since she was a ball of fluff puppy with one ear up and the other down, but even so, I would always wait for her permission before opening her gate.
2. Dora, so named because she loves to explore, greeted me with a deep woof. What large, aristocratic breed that is at home on land as well as in water, and whose numbers are on the decline, is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Otterhound

The otterhound was originally bred to hunt otters so love to work either in or out of water. Dora is a happy dog with a sturdy body and a shaggy head, often seen dozing, but leave the high gate open and a party has to be organised to hunt her down!

Since otters have been protected by law in UK, their numbers have increased and those of the otterhound have declined. Fewer puppies are registered every year and in 2014 it was estimated that there were only 1,000 worldwide.
3. Little Bobby, named for the most famous member of his breed, always remembers me as his friend and will always come over with a happy hello. What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Skye terrier

"Greyfriars Bobby" was the Skye terrier that refused to desert his Edinburgh owner's grave. This happy and loyal breed has declined in numbers and experts are worried that the breed will disappear. It would be an awful pity as they are lovely little animals.
4. Max certainly lives up to his name! The biggest dog in the village, but is a real gentlemanly, gentle giant. What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Newfoundland

I first saw Max as a puppy being carried to the car because he was still to have all of his basic inoculations. The look of relief on his owners' faces when he was able to go out under his own steam was amazing. Five years on, Max is apt to lean on you and knock you over because he loves his humans and just wants to be close.
5. Moppet, the large, white Hungarian dog, knows that I am a friend of the family, so allows me to stop and say hello, unlike the burglar that he caught and sat on till the police arrived to take him away! What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Komondor

The Komondor and Puli are both Hungarian breeds with corded coats, but the Komondor is the much larger dog and always white. They were bred to be livestock guard dogs, so are very protective of their family. When needed, they will attack and keep their victim down as in the burglar.

Moppet was so named for the corded coat that the breed is known for. At first he was just a white ball of fluff, but by the age of two he did look like a giant mop head.
6. A pair of black and white dogs just inside the farm gates are next. Jack and Jill know that they are not allowed to round me up, although I did need to rescue my children a few times when the pair tried to look after them for me! What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Border collie

Black and white Border collies are one of the most recognisable dog breeds. Jack and Jill are working dogs, so when left to their own devices they often practice on children or ducks.

Jill is being trained for obedience competitions and I often watch her training sessions on the lawn outside the village hall.
7. Not much bigger than the UK chocolate bar that has the same name as its shortened form, the furious yaps coming from the next house told me that this beribboned lady is in charge! What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Yorkie

The Yorkie, or Yorkshire Terrier, is a toy dog breed that had retained terrier characteristics. It is as if they do not realise how small they are compared to the rest of the world.

The Yorkie chocolate bar is a Nestlé brand. It is advertised as NOT for girls, so I refuse to eat them!
8. George lives up to his name as the "King of Terriers" and accepts my respectful greeting. What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Airedale terrier

George is a properly trained Airedale, so despite his size, he is a friendly animal. I first met him as a puppy with enormous paws and watched as he grew into them.

Despite their aristocratic epithet, they were also the Yorkshire commoner's choice of dog and often used in ratting competitions.
9. A Blenheim coloured dog was my next stop. This larger toy breed is a lap dog par excellence, so very friendly, but usually yaps to make sure he gets my attention. What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Cavalier King Charles spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles is a larger and usually healthier version of the King Charles. They are a very popular breed and a friendly a lap dog as you could wish to meet. Many years ago I used to know a pair who spent most of their days in the back yard. Their continued yapping for attention was seen as a little intimidating at times, but when they quietened down they could be very friendly.

The Blenheim colouring is a white background with distinct spots or patches of chestnut brown, known as red. It was named for Blenheim palace, the home of the Duke of Marlborough, who bred the animals.

Unfortunately, the Norfolk spaniel is considered to be extinct.
10. Otto is one of three of his breed in the village, attesting to their rise in popularity. His distinctive moustache tickled as I petted him. What breed is protected by the "Beware of the Dog" sign?

Answer: Miniature schnauzer

The Miniature schnauzer is another dog bred for ratting. These clever little dogs are very active and love to be off discovering the world. As a non-family member they will often be polite, but uninterested in my attention.
