Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My name is Buddy. I live over the back fence with my family, Roger, Mrs. Roger, and their son Roger Jr. I am a smooth-coated, small hound used for hunting. What breed am I?

Answer: Beagle

A beagle is an iconic hunting hound due to its energy and love of the chase. It also has a distinctive bark. Other answers are true hunting breeds, but have incorrect adjectives. A pointer and flusher are hunting dogs, but the physical descriptions aren't accurate. As a true water-dog, the Poodle is not considered a hunting hound.
2. My family just moved next door and I bark at Summer (all in fun). My name is Kola. My human dad loves to bow-hunt and wants me to help. I am the official state dog of Louisiana and have a distinctive voice. Which breed am I?

Answer: Catahoula hound

I am the state dog of Louisiana. After being recognized as such in 1979, my name was officially changed to "Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog." I am also known as the Catahoula Hog Dog...gotta love it!

By the way, the Chupacabra is a mythical monster also known as a "goat sucker." I don't think there is a dog named in recognition.
3. Hi! My name is Sonny and I live in this dog-friendly neighborhood. My American family calls me a "Heinz 57." I think this is so cool, but am not certain what this means. Can you help me?

Answer: I am a mixed breed named for a brand name of various items.

A "Heinz 57" is a dog that has a mixed heritage and/or is a non-specific breed. The nickname sounds rather better then mongrel. Sometimes adopted from the local Humane Society, these canine friends are often loving and devoted companions. The Heinz Company is known for its many sauces, condiments and vegetable products.
4. Marge is another neighbor. She has several canines. King is a German shepherd and Kong is an American Alsatian. On their walks, many people confuse the two breeds. What is the easiest way to distinguish them?

Answer: Size

Similar in color and coat, the two breeds are difficult to distinguish. The American Alsatian tends to be larger than a German shepherd. Not so easy to distinguish during a daily walk are the facts that American Alsatians live four to six years longer (due to health issues in German shepherds), but German shepherds take to training better than the American Alsatians. Despite their differences, both breeds are loving family protectors.

As of February 21, 2010, the breed formerly known as Alsatian shepalute became known as the American Alsatian. First registered in the USA in 1988, the shepalute has five purebred dogs in its lineage: the Alaskian Malamute, the German shepherd, the great Pyrennes, the Anatolian shepherd and the English mastiff.
5. Oops! When next-door wife and three daughters asked bow-hunter dad if they could have a puppy, evidently a hunting dog was not what was in mind. Mom and the girls ended up with Peaches, a small dog that originated from Mexico. What is its breed?

Answer: Chihuahua

Peaches is a Chihuahua. The breed originated from the Mexican region of the same name.

Papillon is a French word for butterfly. The lovely dogs of this breed are thus named because their ears resemble butterflies. Pugs are super cute.

A Standard poodle is a largish dog.
6. My name is Cannon. My family lives across the street. I am a large, black short-haired dog. Called "even tempered, athletic and playful; an assistant to the blind, elderly and autistic individuals," what is my American Kennel Club (AKC) breed?

Answer: Labrador retriever

I am a Labrador retriever, a very popular breed around the world. The other options are (unfortunately) extinct breeds of dogs which lived in various times from ancient Greece to 18th century England. I am certain they were wonderful dogs, so kiss your puppies, y'all!
7. My name is Spot. I live at the firehouse down the road from my canine friend Summer. I am a Dalmatian, a familiar breed due to my friendly personality and black and white coat. Unfortunately, albino and pie-bald animals like me have some health problems. The Board of Governors of the Dalmatian Club of America recommend euthanizing puppies that exhibit which of the following?

Answer: Deafness

Get ready...this is incredibly cruel. I cite from the "Dalmation Club of America" website. "Deaf (purebred) pups should ALWAYS be humanely destroyed by a veterinarian...many breeders choose to have their deaf pups put down at three to four weeks." When researching this question, I wept.

If deafness is not enough, purebred Dalmatians may also suffer from hyperuricemia - a condition in which the liver cannot break down uric acid, thus leading to gout, kidney stones and bladder stones. Unfortunately, there is no possibility of eradicating this genetic disease in the modern Dalmatian. If interested in the effort to overcome this problem through breeding, please refer to the "Dalmatian-Pointer Backcross Project."
8. Summer loves her friend, McDuff, as they are from the same country. First classified in the area where Scotland and England meet, his breed was promoted by Queen Victoria in the latter 1800s. What breed is he?

Answer: Border collie

Yes! He is a Border collie. An energetic and loving dog, his distinctive black and white coat is visible through the fields while this working dog herds sheep, poultry and children. (Some families use their collies to ensure their kids make the school bus. How great!)

Queen Elizabeth II loves the Welsh corgi breed. Irish wolfhounds are a majestic (but short-lived) breed. Skye terriers are a lovely breed with an almost blue coat, originating on the Isle of Skye.
9. My name is Jax. I live down the road from Summer. My breed is brachycephalic and has mandibular prognathism. First spotted in Munich in 1895, I am medium in size and have a fawn/brindle coat. What is my breed?

Answer: Boxer

A boxer has a broad, short skull (brachycephalic) and an underbite (mandibular prognathiam). (Sorry about the scary Latin...it is part of the breed definition of the American Kennel Club!)

The boxer was bred from an Old English bulldog and the Bullenbeisser (now extinct) and was first exhibited at a dog show for St. Bernards in Munich in 1895.

By the way, Jax never gets to take a walk. He lives in his backyard (with a chain-link fence) so he is able to "talk" to Summer as she strolls past on her lead. Please be certain to take your furry friends for adventures now and then. They love you, so love them back!
10. Summer doesn't watch TV, but her human sister enjoys a cartoon that stars a gentle giant (aka "the king of dogs.") Very large, strong, elegant, friendly and energetic, what is his breed which originated in Germany?

Answer: Great Dane

According the AKC website, the Great Dane is "nothing short of majestic." The modern version can be traced to a breeding between Irish wolfhounds and English mastiffs developed by Germans to hunt boar. Since boars are not such a problem nowadays (unless you are stuck at a cocktail party with a true "bore"), modern great Danes are primarily used as guardians and estate dogs.

(Summer's human sister likes Scooby-Doo - the star of a 1960s cartoon show. The great Dane and his friend, Shaggy, are both cowardly and hungry for "Scooby Snacks."
