Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did most of the redbone coonhound's ancestors come from?

Answer: Scotland and Ireland

This rich, red dog is lean and muscular. It has short hair and large paws which help it retrieve from water. Most of the types of dogs used to create this hound came from Scotland and Ireland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
2. In 2018, which color combination of the Boston terrier is NOT recognized by the American Kennel Club?

Answer: Red and white

This fun little dog came about in Boston. Black, brindle and seal (dark brown), all in combination with white, are the only colors allowed by the AKC. Red and white Boston terriers are available, but only via cross breeding, so they are not acceptable for showing. It is an energetic dog, that is often called the "American Gentleman".
3. Take a look at this photo and tell me what type of dog this is?

Answer: Alaskan Malamute

This canine fur factory is, as his name implies, native to the 49th state. The Alaskan Malamute thrived and became valuable during the Alaska Gold Rush when miners paid sky-high prices for sleds and dog teams. They are very strong dogs used for pulling heavy sleds across the ice.
4. What type of dog is this American breed?

Answer: Silken windhound

The Silken windhound is a sighthound that is easily trained. It comes in a huge variety of colors and has medium to long hair. It is not a good guard dog due its (usually) friendly disposition.
5. What is this hunting dog with a geographic location in its name?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay Retriever

When a British brig was wrecked off the coast of Maryland in 1807, two Newfoundland dogs were rescued. These dogs were bred to make the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This hunting dog is ready and willing to brace the rough, icy chop of the Chesapeake Bay, and is capable of retrieving 100 to 200 ducks a day.
6. What is the name of this curly eared dog?

Answer: Boykin Spaniel

The Boykin spaniel originated in South Carolina where it was bred to be a boat dog used for retrieving turkeys, ducks and pheasant. It is a stocky dog that is well-muscled. The tail is docked when the puppy is three days old.
7. This breed is called a Chinook.

Answer: True

This is a rare breed of sled dog. One of those pups accompanied Admiral Richard Byrd on a 1927 expedition to Antarctica. This breed of sled dog handles the cold better than almost any other dogs and was originally bred in New Hampshire.
8. This is called the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Answer: True

This dog is the American Staffordshire Terrier that was bred to hunt rats and other small vermin. It is in the American pit bull group. Due to poor owners, this type of dog has acquired a bad reputation for being uncontrollable and vicious. This is undeserved as the breed is usually sweet, loyal and brave.
9. This breed of dog is which Canadian breed?

Answer: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is the smallest breed of retriever. This copper colored dog is a great gun dog and is full of energy. It has webbed feet and loves the water. These wonderful dogs make great pets but need an owner whose is willing to give them plenty of exercise.
10. Which dog is often credited with being the smallest dog breed?

Answer: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a tiny toy breed that is friendly, loyal and a great companion dog. It comes in a plethora of colors and in long coat and short coat varieties. Chihuahuas generally weigh no more than five pounds.
