Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What species of bird were American Cocker Spaniels originally bred to hunt?

Answer: Woodcock

Cockers were originally bred to hunt woodcock, though most today are family pets.
2. Which other breed of dog belongs in the same classification as the American Cocker Spaniel?

Answer: Labrador Retriever

Believe it or not, Labrador Retrievers are in the same breed classification, Sporting Dogs, as the Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker is the smallest of the Sporting breeds.
3. Name one approved "show" color for an American Cocker Spaniel.

Answer: buff

The Cocker comes in several pretty colors, but only a few are approved by the AKC.
4. American Cocker Spaniels are not good with other pets, therefore they should be "only children".

Answer: False

Cockers are wonderful with other animals, especially if they're raised well.
5. The American Cocker Spaniel is a "wash & wear" dog, requiring little to no grooming.

Answer: False

The Cocker can be a high maintenance dog where grooming is concerned if you do not put them on a regular grooming schedule with at-home touch ups in between. Depending on coat texture and length, you can along with your groomer, determine how often you need to professionally groom.
6. A typical disorder in poorly bred American Cockers, what is patellar luxation?

Answer: slipped knee caps

One of the most common orthopedic problems with Cocker Spaniels, luxating patellas can be fixed with surgery.
7. Which of these tasks do Cocker Spaniels excel at?

Answer: All of these

A well-bred, healthy Cocker can excel at all of these. A health check is a good idea for agility competitions however.
8. What temperament can you expect from a well-bred American Cocker Spaniel?

Answer: Merry & Loyal

A well-bred Cocker should be merry and loyal, typically easy to be around and to train.
9. At what age should you first get your Cocker Spaniel involved in socialization with other puppies?

Answer: 10 weeks

Plenty of trainers are now holding "Puppy Preschool" classes with pups as young as 10 weeks of age. As long as they are properly vaccinated (talk to your vet to determine what is appropriate), young puppies can enjoy early socialization and help to become well-rounded adults.
10. What is the name of the cloth cover you can put over your Cocker Spaniel's ears to keep them out of her food bowls when she eats and drinks?

Answer: Snood

The Snood is a wonderful product for anyone who shows their Cocker, or for anyone who just hates cleaning up after dripping ears!
11. Because they're a hunting dog, Cocker Spaniels do not do well in small dwellings, such as apartments.

Answer: False

Cockers do well in almost any home, as long as they receive a proper diet and medical care, exercise, and of course, love!
12. Which one of these medical conditions is a common occurrence in Cocker Spaniels?

Answer: All of these

A poorly bred Cocker can have all of these problems. Getting your dog from a well researched breeder is best.
13. What should you do if you suspect your Cocker has allergies?

Answer: See a veterinarian

Only a veterinarian can diagnose allergies in any dog. And you should NEVER administer human drugs to any animal. It can be extremely harmful, or worse.
14. The majority of American cocker spaniels are quite content in what position today?

Answer: Family Companion

Most cocker spaniels today are well-deserving family pets.
15. This is one of the biggest health problems plaguing the Cocker Spaniel today.

Answer: Obesity

Sadly, many Cockers these days are grossly overweight, which can contribute to the other health ailments mentioned above. A balanced diet and exercise is important for the canines as well!
