Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a member of the Sporting Dog group.

Answer: False

Although they are spaniels, Cavs belong to the Toy Group.
2. Cavs come in four different colors - tricolor, ruby, black and tan, and this.

Answer: Blenheim

The chestnut and white coat on Cavaliers is called Blenheim. The name is derived from the fact that the estate of the Duke of Marlborough, who had many of the chestnut and white toy spaniels, was named Blenheim Castle.
3. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is named for King Charles I of England.

Answer: False

While Charles I and other royal members did have toy spaniels, it was during the reign of Charles II that the breed became well known. Known as the Cavalier King, Charles II had many of these dogs that followed him everywhere.
4. Which of these is not an activity for which Cavaliers were once used?

Answer: guarding livestock

Known as the "Ultimate Lap Dog" or the "Comforter Spaniel", Cavs were often used to warm their owners and to keep fleas off of them. Due to their sporting nature, they also were once used to flush game. Cavs do not have the type of personality to be guard dogs.
5. What is the most serious of the inherited diseases affecting the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

Answer: mitral valve disease

All breeds have inherited diseases, and the Cav is no exception. Generally very healthy, Cavaliers should be checked yearly for murmurs and the beginnings of mitral valve disease. The average lifespan of this breed is approximately 10-12 years, but untreated mitral valve disease can lead to premature death.
6. Which American president owned a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Other famous owners of Cavs have included Diane Sawyer, Frank Sinatra, Courtney Cox, Liv Tyler, and Sylvester Stallone.
7. Cavaliers are independent dogs that do well being left alone for long periods of time.

Answer: False

Although they can certainly be left for periods of time, Cavaliers crave and need your company. They are extremely affectionate and are happiest when they are close to you - preferably on your lap!
8. Because they are the "Ultimate Lap Dog", Cavaliers require minimal exercise - in fact they are happiest just lying around.

Answer: False

Cavs are very happy lying by your side or on top of you, but they are also very lively dogs that enjoy adequate supervised exercise. Still retaining their hunting instincts and an incredible sense of smell, they love to chase birds, rabbits, squirrels, and even butterflies! Therefore, no matter how obedient your Cav may be, it should always be kept in a fenced yard or on a leash when out.
9. Even though Cavs have a moderate length, silky coat with lots of feathering on the legs, feet, ears, tail and chest, they do not require extensive grooming.

Answer: True

Cavaliers are fairly low maintenance from a grooming standpoint. The Cavalier coat just requires regular bathing and brushing. In fact, the breed standard does not allow any trimming of the coat - the only allowable trimming is the hair growing between the pads on the bottom of the feet.
10. Sometimes when a Cavalier gets very excited, it makes a loud grunting noise and seems as though it is momentarily gasping for air. This is known as "_________________".

Answer: snorting

"Snorting" , which originates in the structures of the soft palate and uvula, is not dangerous to the dog and therefore not a cause for alarm. It will stop on its own, or you can gently hold the dog's mouth closed while momentarily placing a finger over its nostrils.
