Collective Nouns Trivia Quiz

In English, a group of animals is practically never called a 'group'. Instead, you might end up with a 'congregation', a 'colony' or a 'smack'. I give the collective noun, you give the animal.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A parcel of...?

Answer: penguins

Also available in 'huddles' or 'colonies'.
2. A business of...?

Answer: ferrets

Other collective nouns: 'Cast' and 'fesnying' (?)
3. A storytelling of...?

Answer: crows

A bit nicer than 'a murder of crows'. Rooks and ravens also come in storytellings.
4. A nuisance of...?

Answer: cats

Specifically, house cats. If they were wild, they would be a 'destruction', and if they were just plain cats, they could be a 'pounce' or a 'glaring'.
5. An ambush of...?

Answer: tigers

Lions may come in 'prides' or 'troops', snakes in 'pits' or 'beds', and locusts, of course, in 'plagues'.
6. A mischief of...?

Answer: mice

So a nuisance of house cats might chase a mischief of mice.
7. A crossing of...?

Answer: zebras

A zebra crossing.. Oh no.
8. A wedge of...?

Answer: swans

Only when flying in a 'V'-formation, mind you. Otherwise it's a 'herd' or a 'bevy'.
9. An implausibility of...?

Answer: gnus

If you can't remember the long version, try the more normal 'herd' when speeking of gnus in public.
10. And, finally: Which animal comes in a 'weyr'?

Answer: dragon

For fantasy-readers this might be easier. Other collective nouns: A 'wing' or a 'flight'. There is a great book called 'The Flight of Dragons' by Peter Dickinson, by the way.
