4. Which biological family of the order Carnivora includes domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals and dingos?

Answer: Canidae

The separation of the dog-like 'caniforms' and the cat-like 'feliforms' is thought to have taken place around 40 million years ago, with the canidae family splitting into foxes and canines some 12 million years ago. Felidae is the family containing all cats, from big cats such as tigers and leopard to smaller house cats. Ursidae is the family containing bears, while mustelidae is the family containing mustelids such as weasels and otters.

5. To the delight of environmentalists, mealworms have been shown in studies to be able to eat which human-produced waste material?

Answer: styrofoam

Not only can they eat it but they have thrived on it and their subsequent waste has been found suitable as compost for food crops. A single mealworm can consume about a third of a milligram per day which may not sound like much but it is easy to bring them in numbers in the thousands and make short work of a pretty large pile of styrofoam.

This is a major win for waste management as recycling options for styrofoam are sometimes limited.

7. What creature is said to have been named in honor of England's King William III (The Prince of Orange)?

Answer: Monarch butterfly

The monarch butterfly, with its orange and black wings, is one of the most recognizable animals. The king's secondary title, "The Prince of Orange" is the basis for the orange colored butterfly's most common name. The monarch, found throughout most of North America, is sometimes called the milkweed butterfly because the larvae feed only on milkweed.

8. Which of the following best describes what a bushmaster is?

Answer: snake

The bushmaster is a type of venomous snake that has a pair of special heat-sensing organs on its face. These organs are also called heat pits, and they are used to detect the body heat of their prey. Their venom damages blood vessels and dissolves living flesh quickly. Victims can be left with a deep indented wound or even require an amputation.

10. With a hair count that could be close to one million hairs per square inch, this small marine animal depends on its fur to keep it warm in the coldest water. Which animal boasts of being the mammal with the densest fur on earth?

Answer: Sea otter

Sea otters depend on their dense fur to keep them warm in the chilly Arctic waters. Unlike some other mammals of the northern-most regions, sea otters spend the majority of their time in the water. Without the blubber of the whale or land dwelling habits of the polar bear or the bushy tail and warm den of the fox (and, other animals), the sea otter developed a dense fur that could trap a layer of air and provide superb insulation.

The sea otter's hair count has been known to exceed over 800,000 per square inch.

In comparison to that count, the human head averages between 800 and 1300 hairs per square inch; or, (only!) about 100,000 hairs on the entire head.
