Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nagapie, or little night monkey, is what the Afrikaans call which nocturnal primate?

Answer: Bush baby

The bush baby jumps around in leaps and bounds from tree to tree, crying and chattering like a human baby. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, these small primates are approximately the same size as a squirrel, but with large eyes that can see the smallest movement at night, and with tiny ears that are very sensitive to sound. Their main diet consists of tasty insects, fruit and leaves.
2. Which South American monkey is believed to be the smallest primate in the world?

Answer: Pygmy marmoset

Also called pocket monkey, the pygmy marmoset can be so small that it can fit into a human palm. With their long tail and sharp claws, they can leap 15 feet in the air from branch to branch. They are native to the rainforests of Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador and Peru. On average they only weigh 110g, but their natural defense mechanism of fluffing up their fur makes them appear larger than they really are.
3. Saguinus oedipus is the scientific name of which primate?

Answer: Cotton-top tamarin

There are approximately 18 species of tamarin, all of them different in appearance. Some have long manes while others have a long moustache. Some are black and white while others are golden. The cotton-tops were named because of their distinctive mane of white fur flowing from the top of their head.

These small primates can be found in the forests of South America. Unfortunately, they are classed as critically endangered with just 6,000 or so still living in the wild.
4. The capuchin monkey can live up to 25 years in the wild.

Answer: True

Capuchin monkeys are diurnal which means they are active during the day and sleep at night. Native to parts of South America, these tree-dwelling animals feed on nuts, fruit, spiders and insects. Those that live next to a shoreline eat crabs by cracking them open against a rock.

They are very intelligent species which is why they have been chosen many times for experiments in laboratories. They can live up to 45 years in captivity, but only 25 years in the wild.
5. Which primate, closely related to the baboon, looks as though red and blue stripes have been painted on their faces?

Answer: Mandrill

The shy and reclusive mandrill is the world's largest monkey. They can be identified by their colourful noses which are more pronounced on the male than the female, and become brighter when they are excited. They also have brightly coloured rumps and long canines which they use if provoked.

They are native to The Congo, Gabon and Cameroon where they are hunted for their meat which is considered to be a delicacy.
6. There are five species of baboon but which is the largest?

Answer: Chacma

The chacma baboon, or Cape baboon (Papio ursinus), is an Old World monkey with an approximate body length of up to 1.5m (including tail) and weight of up to 33kg. The majority are native to the south of Africa, preferring to live in wooded areas or savanna during the day and finding hills and tall trees to sleep at night.

They live in large communities called troops of up to 100 strong, including males, females and their offspring.
7. Which of these is not a type of gibbon?

Answer: White-tailed gibbon

There are many species of gibbon but there is no such mammal called a white-tailed gibbon, as like all apes, gibbons have evolved to become tail-less. Their colour ranges in different shades of brown, with either white or black markings. They are unusual in that their wrist comprises of a ball and socket joint which allows them to rotate their whole hand.

This comes in useful for arboreal living in their native Asia.
8. Together with the chimpanzee, which other primate is the closest living relative to man?

Answer: Bonobo

The former name for bonobo was pygmy chimpanzee. Native to the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the bonobo is smaller than the chimpanzee, but both share 98.7% of their DNA with human beings, making them our closest living relative.

They are sex-obsessed, using intercourse as a form of greeting or reconciliation after a conflict, and they do not discriminate against age or sex of their partner.
9. Which monkey, native to South America, is known for its loud shriek?

Answer: Howler monkey

The howler monkey is believed to be the loudest land animal in the world. Native to South America, the sound of their howls can travel up to three miles through dense forests. Their voices are heard mainly at the start and end of the day, using their vocal chords to protect their territory and to identify where their competitors can be located.
10. When all is said and done, monkeys enjoy nothing better than monkeying around and pulling funny faces. What type of primate is smiling out of this image?

Answer: Crested macaque

The crested macaque can be identified by the prominent ridge above their eyes and crest of hair on top of their head. They can only be found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and are known locally as yaki or wolai. These medium sized primates are frugivorous, mainly feeding on figs and other fruit native to the island, and occasionally eating mice, crabs and small lizards.
