Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An Irish Half-Bred is a mix between the Irish Draft and what other breed of horse?

Answer: Thoroughbred

The Irish Half-Bred has only recently been classified as a breed and has produced top class show-jumper and eventer competitive horses. They are also used in hunting. Also in their ancestry is the Connemara.
2. The Cleveland Bay originated in what country?

Answer: England

Cleveland Bays are mainly used for driving and riding and have a mainly Native Chapmen Horse and Thoroughbred ancestry. They are used as all-round horses, agricultural and draft horses, harness horses, riding horses and hunting horses.
3. The ergot is on a horse's --.

Answer: leg

It is on the lower leg under the cannon bone and above the coronet.
4. The loose-ring jointed snaffle is usually used in --.

Answer: racing

Rubber rings are usually used along with the loose-ring jointed snaffle as the rings can pinch the corners of the mouth.
5. The horse chestnut tree was once used for medicinal purposes.

Answer: True

"There are around 25 species of the horse chestnut tree in North America, Europe, and Asia. In the late 1500s the seeds apparently were used for treating respiratory illnesses in horses, and this is how the tree got its name. The spiny capsules enclose large seeds, the scar of which resemble a horse's hoof and even seems to show the holes for the nails." -Excerpt from Eyewitness Books: Horse by Juliet Clutton Brock
6. The Shire breed is known for its violent horses.

Answer: False

Actually it's quite the opposite! Shires are known for their docile, gentle, and kind personalities.
7. What is the maximum height (according to the American Shetland Pony club referring to the Classic American Shetland Pony) of a Shetland Pony?

Answer: 11.2 hands

Several of my own books state the maximum height of a Shetland Pony at 10.2 hands, while the ASPC says its 11.2 and the ASPR (The American Show Pony Registry) says the maximum height (to be recorded in the stud book) of a pony registered with the ASPR, or the American Hackney Horse Society, or the result of a breeding between a registered Shetland and registered Hackney, is 12 hands.
8. Horses can see more colors than humans.

Answer: False

It used to be believed that horses were color-blind but new research shows they do have similar color-discerning cells in their eyes to those of humans. Horses can see yellow the best, and then orange, red, and green. However they have difficulty with blue and violet. Because of these reasons it is important to school your horse over many different colored jumps.
9. The -- is the favorite horse of the (American) cowboy.

Answer: Quarter Horse

The Quarter Horse was first bred in the eastern United States and was found to have a particular talent for herding cattle.
10. Horses descended from four-toed horse-like animals.

Answer: True

Many branches of the horse family died out, leaving only the one-toed group that Equus (the modern horse) evolved from.
