The most common breed is the German Shepherd, however Belgian Malinois are increasing in numbers. They look like German Shepherds, but are faster and have a stronger drive.

USPCA stands for the United States Police Canine Association. They have a national competition every year and award dogs in such areas as agility, article search, bite work, and obedience.

When a dog retires from service, it often goes with the handler. Although the dog doesn't actually work anymore, it still lives a normal life at the handler's home. They make very good family pets.

These dogs are trained to apprehend by verbal command from their handler and will also instinctively attack to protect their handler. If a suspect tries to harm the officer and the dog believes the officer is in danger, it will attack without command in an effort to protect its handler.

This is the same for physical agitation. If a suspect acts inappropriately- yelling, fighting, etc.- the dog interprets that as a threat.

Answer: False

Although they're not actually paid, most departments do provide all food and costs associated with the dog such as vet bills. The dog, on the other hand is rewarded with a toy every time a job is performed correctly, which to them is more then enough pay!
