Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I wanted to see a kakapo in the wild, to which of the following countries would I have to travel?

Answer: New Zealand

Indigenous to the island nation of New Zealand, the critically endangered kakapo is one of the world's most unique birds. This ground-dwelling bird is the heaviest parrot on the planet, as well as one of the rarest. At one time there were hundreds of thousands of these birds on the islands, but with the arrival of humans (of course), their numbers declined quickly.

As with many animals who evolve in isolation, the arrival of new species can quickly cause an extinction of local flora and fauna.
2. What is the name of this beautiful African antelope?

Answer: Kudu

There are two species of kudu and both are found in Africa. This is an image of the larger of the known, which is known, appropriately enough, as the greater kudu. Its smaller relative is known as the lesser kudu. This herbivorous grazer can run for miles even when injured.

They live in herds of related females with their young. Males are allowed in during the mating season, but spend the rest of the year in a bachelor herd or leading a solitary lifestyle. Other than man, their greatest enemies are the large wild cats of Africa, as well as hyenas, wilds dogs, and pythons.

The other three options are all rare dog breeds.
3. In which of the following trees would you be most likely to spot a koala?

Answer: Eucalyptus

The koala is a social creature that is usually found munching on eucalyptus leaves, which make up almost all of their diet. The koala is often thought of as being cute and cuddly, which they most definitely are not. While they may be cute to look at, a frightened koala, by using its large claws, can cause real harm to any human they perceive as a threat.

This unusual animal is found only in Australia, and is one of the few animals in the world, other than primates, to have fingerprints!
4. The magnificent killer whale is found in all the oceans of our planet.

Answer: True

The adaptable killer whale, also known as an orca, can be found in all of the Earth's oceans. This apex predator will feed on whatever food source is available in the area. They have been known to eat seal, walrus, fish and even large whales. Their innate intelligence is displayed by their complex hunting strategies as well as in their intricate vocalizations which vary from location to location.

It should be noted that the killer whale is from the dolphin family, and is not a shark.
5. What Hungarian breed of dog is shown in this picture?

Answer: Kuvasz

The kuvasz is a beautiful herding dog with origins in Hungary, Russia, and Mongolia. It was bred to have a white coat so that the shepherd could be sure that it was this dog in their livestock and not a darker colored wolf. The kuvasz is an intelligent breed, that is intensely loyal, and loves to work.

But don't let that beautiful face entice you in to getting a kuvasz. This heavily furred breed can grow to 120 lbs. (53 kg.), and are a breed for an experienced owner only.
6. Often called a honey bear, what is an alternate name for this South American mammal?

Answer: Kinkajou

The kinkajou makes its home the rain forests of South America and is sometimes found as far north as southern Mexico. This small, woolly gray mammal rarely exceeds ten lbs. or more than 24 inches in length (not including their tail). The kinkajou is quite small with their weight from 3 to 10 pounds.

They have short legs that sport five toes and very sharp claws. In the wild they eat fruits, nuts, and berries are known to eat honey only when held in captivity. The other three options are all types of alcoholic beverages.
7. Where would you find the adorable Key deer making its home?

Answer: The Florida Keys

This subspecies of the white-tailed deer lives only in the Florida Keys and is the smallest deer to be found in North America. Even the largest males weigh less than 75 lbs. (34 kg.) and are shorter than 30 in. (76cm) in height. Only the males sport antlers and both sexes are extremely good swimmers.

They can be observed swimming back and forth between the islands and have very little fear of humans. The greatest danger to their populations is car-to-deer collisions which tend to occur at dawn and dusk.

The key deer was in danger of becoming extinct in the 1950s, but stringent conservation measures have led to a dramatic increase in their population. At the turn of the 21st century, the population had risen to an estimated 700 individuals.
8. Where would you need to travel if you wanted to have the best chance to observe a pair of Kauai 'Akialoa in the wild?

Answer: Hawaii

The Kauai 'Akialoa were found on the Hawaiian islands. But a trip to these beautiful islands will not guarantee that you will be able to see a pair of these unusual birds. They have not been seen since 1965 in the Alakai Swamp on the island of Kauai. This beautiful bird had a long, slender, downward beak designed to get to the flower nectar found in their lush surroundings.

They were a mixture of green, yellow, and gray feathers, with the males being much more brightly colored. Sadly, little more is known about these birds, who may have suffered a fate that has become all to common among indigenous island species.

Introduced species, habitat loss, and disease have caused the loss of many unusual and unique animals found only on isolated islands of the world.
9. The Kodiak bear is actually a brown polar bear.

Answer: False

Although one of the largest bears in the world, and found only on the Alaskan island of Kodiak, the Kodiak bear is not a polar bear. It is actually a subspecies of the American grizzly bear. They are closely related to the brown bears that are found on the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. Males of this subspecies can weigh up to 2400lbs. (1,090 kg).

This omnivore feasts on fish, berries, small mammals, seaweed and left-over human garbage. Litters of up to six cubs have been observed, although 3-4 is the average.
10. The king cobra is the world's longest venomous snake.

Answer: True

This statement is true. Found in the southern parts of Asia, the king cobra is indeed the longest venomous snake in the world. Although they do not have the most toxic venom in the snake family, they deliver such a large dose in one bite that it is capable of killing 20 men or possibly even an elephant.

This deadly serpent has been known to grow to lengths of 15 ft. and weights of up to 28 lbs. (12.7 kg). Despite its large size, the king cobra is a quick moving agile serpent. Depending on its habitat, it can be found in shades of green, tan, black, or yellow.
