Since Danes reach almost their maximum skeletal size by the time they're 1 year old, they grow really fast. Which means that they need to be on a low protein diet (21-23% protein) in order to slow down the growth so the bones develop properly. If they are given puppy food or any other high protein kibble they might develop bone problems like HOD, OCD or Pano later on in life.

Bloat is a major concern for older Danes. Although there have been rare instances where a puppy had bloated. Bloat is a term used for when air is trapped inside the stomach and can't escape, then the stomach flips cutting off the blood supply to vital organs.

The dog will die in several hours, if not treated. Even with treatment 25-33% of dogs die. Great Dane owners should familiarize themselves with signs and symptoms of bloat, so they know in case it happens. The dog should be brought to a Veterinarian immediately.
