Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the Great Dane that won Best in Show at Crufts in 1953?

Answer: Ch. Elch Elder of Ouborough

The Ouborough Kennels were owned by James Voase Rank, and run by Bill Siggers. J V Rank died the year before Ch. Elch Elder of Ouborough won Best In Show at Crufts.
2. Who gave the breed the name it is known by today (ie: Great Dane)?

Answer: Comte de Buffon

Comte de Buffon saw slimmer type Boar Hounds while travelling through Denmark back in the 1700's. Very impressed with their size and elegance he named them the Great Danish Dog (Grand Danois). Even though they are a German breed, the Danish name stuck.
3. What is gastric dilatation?

Answer: Bloat.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is also known as bloat, stomach torsion, or twisted stomach. It is a very serious, sometimes fatal health concern in a Great Dane and something you should be very aware of! A few symptoms to look out for are swollen abdomen, abdomen pain, excessive drooling, retching but not actually being sick and rapid short breaths.
4. If you were to breed a homozygous fawn with a black mask to a homozygous blue, what colour puppies would they produce?

Answer: Black

Black is a dominant colour, that can cover over all other colours. Fawn and blue are both recessive colours. Breeding these two colours together would result in 100% of the puppies being black.

It is highly recommended that you only breed together these colour combinations :- fawn/fawn, fawn/brindle, brindle/brindle, blue/blue, blue/black, black/black, black/harlequin, harlequin/harlequin (Harlequin does include bostons/mantles)
5. What Great Dane won Best of Breed at Crufts in 2000?

Answer: Ch. Garsak Morning Glory

All four of these dogs have won Best Of Breed at Crufts with Ch. Ravendane Magic For Garsak winning it most recently in 2006. 1999 was Ch. Turlum True To Form and 1997 was Ch. Garsak Summer Rain.
6. Which of these names are NOT an alternative name for the Great Dane?

Answer: Deutsch Kurzhaar

Deutsch Kurzhaar is the German name for the German Shorthaired Pointer.

The Dogue Allemand is the Belgian name, The Geweldige Deen is the Dutch name and the Grand Danois is the French name for Great Dane.
7. What of the following is a serious fault that is not allowed in the show ring for a Harlequin Great Dane?

Answer: Brindle Colouring

There are such things as Fawnequin (Fawn coloured patches) and Brindlequin (Brindle coloured patches) but these are highly undesirable and cannot be shown. These usually result from accidental matings.
8. There are several Great Dane Clubs in the United Kingdom. Which one of these is NOT a recognised Great Dane club?

Answer: The English Great Dane Club

There are 9 Great Dane Clubs in the UK. The Scottish, Pennine, The Northern, The East Of England, The Midland & West, Great Dane Breeders & Owners Association, The South Western, The Great Dane Club and The Great Dane Club Of South Wales.
9. Which description would make the better show dog?

Answer: High set ears, chiselled face & scissor bite.

Some of the points mentioned on the incorrect answers are right, but danes shouldnt have a snipy muzzle, low croup, pendulous ears, level bite or a short foreface.
10. How would you describe the Great Dane's temperament?

Answer: Kind without nervousness, friendly and outgoing.

There should never be aggression in a Great Dane although they can be stubborn at times. A Great Dane should be a bold dog, not showing signs of shyness. They are a very predictable breed!
