Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Shakespeare's play, "Richard III", a horseless Richard, at the Battle of Bosworth Field, cries, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" Which of these horse breeds, being native to England, would Richard most likely have encountered?

Answer: Dartmoor

The Dartmoor horse comes from the moors of southern England, and had become hardy from having been left in the swampy moors to survive. In February 2013, scientists announced that a body found in central England had been identified through mitochondrial DNA as being that of Richard III.
2. If the French King Louis XIV had been heard to shout, "Mon royaume pour un cheval!", what horse, native to his country, might he have expected to be brought to him?

Answer: Camargue

The Camargue is usually white and is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. It can be found living wild in the swamps of southern France, and was traditionally ridden by the French version of cowboys, herding bulls for French bullfights.
3. If Ferdinand were to say to Isabella, "Mi reino por un caballo!", which Spanish horse would she probably provide him with?

Answer: Mallorquin

Ferdinand would not have been terribly likely to get a Mallorquin, because it is one of two breeds considered native to the Balearic Islands off the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Mediterranean horses are notably different from Spain's five other "Atlantic" breeds.
4. If the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, had suddenly said, "Mein Konigreich fur ein Pferd!", what would his soldiers most likely have brought him?

Answer: Silesian

At an average of 16.3 hands and 1400 pounds, the Silesian is considerably taller and heavier than the average horse. Silesia is now considered part of Poland, so Silesians are thought of as Polish horses, but if I had quoted Frederick as speaking Polish, that might have been confusing.
5. If King Gustav had called, "Mitt rike for en hast!", which breed would he have been most comfortable thinking of as one of his native Swedish subjects?

Answer: Coldblood trotter

Coldblood trotters are Nordic horses, and tend to grow lots of winter fur, which is suitable for the Scandinavian climate. They are usually black, brown, or chestnut, and these days they are mostly used for harness racing.
6. If Victor Emmanuel II had shouted, "Il mio regno per un cavallo!", which Italian breed would he most likely be provided with?

Answer: Bardigiano

The Bardigiano, being adapted to the rocky mountainous territory of the Northern Appenines, would likely make a strong, sturdy mount for a king. Bardigianos are usually bay colored, and are considered good children's horses for their docile temperament.
7. If Peter the Great had announced, "Vse carstvo za konya!" which of these horses would have to travel the least distance through Russia to be delivered to him?

Answer: Tersk

Tersk horses are part-bred Arabian horses, bred to be robust to survive the cold Russian winters. They are known for their endurance, and are also very fast.
8. If Konstantinos had declaimed to his people, "To vasilio mou yia ena alogo!", which breed would the Greeks have found for him most easily?

Answer: Andravida

There are not many horse breeds native to Greece. The Andravida comes from a region of Greece called Ilia, and is generally not bred outside it, so it is already close to extinction.
9. If Aurangzeb had said to his counselors, "Ghora ke badle mera samrajya!", what Indian horse would they have been likely to find for him?

Answer: Marwari

Marwari horses are native to India and are known for their inward turning ear tips. They average 15 to 16 hands, and come in a variety of colors.
10. If Japanese Emperor Hirohito had politely requested, "Watashi no oukoku to hikikae ni uma o kudasai", which of these breeds would most likely have been brought to him?

Answer: Noma

The Noma is the smallest of the Japanese breeds, averaging only 10.2 hands. Its numbers are very low, and it is being preserved to maintain local cultural heritage.
