Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What three letter word describes the device used by a fisherman to extract fish or separate a tennis court?

Answer: Net

Most commercial fishing is done with large nets that scoop floating fish in the net for easy transmittal to the boat. These fishing nets are controversial because animals such as dolphins and small whales can be caught unintentionally within the nets and suffer injury or death as a result. Tennis nets are not controversial, but my inability to hit a ball over them consistently is the reason I was not able to succeed as a professional tennis player.
2. Now as we climb, add a letter to the previous word and you have this word which indicates you were dispatched on a journey to a specified location.

Answer: Sent

Sent is the past participle form of the verb send. Sent is also the name of a small picturesque village of 900 inhabitants in the foothills of the Swiss Alps. If I have to be sent anywhere, I am totally open to being sent to Sent.
3. Heading up again, please add another letter to the previous answer and get a word meaning pays to use another person's property?

Answer: Rents

Rents can either be the plural of the noun "rent", as in the payment to the owner of property for use of the property, or used as a verb to describe the act of the owner offering use of a property for money. Rent is derived from the same Latin word "rendere" that also give us "render" meaning to provide or do.
4. Let's add another letter to our word roller coaster so we get a word meaning to feel bitter or injured by the acts or words of another.

Answer: Resent

Resent is a verb that means to feel indignation or bitterness towards another person. Usually resentment is the result of the feeling of insult or injury from the actions or statements made by another. Resent comes from the French word "ressentir" or to feel angry and is related to the root word in Latin "sentir" that gives us the word "sense".
5. As we reach the top of the roller coaster, you are asked to add another letter to your previous answer, to find a word that, as a noun, means to describe the current moment.

Answer: Present

Present is one those words with a number of inter-related meanings. As a noun, present describes the state of being in this moment. As a verb, the word describes the act of giving, or doing something such as making a speech or providing an introduction for another. Present is also a synonym of gift.

In case you were wondering, there is no time like the present to present a present to a loved one.
6. Heading down now, take a letter from the previous word and find a verb that describes what a person (or a bird) does to make their appearance as good as possible.

Answer: Preens

Preen is a word that is most associated with the actions of birds to arrange or clean their feathers with their bill. In the human context, to preen is to take care, often overly long, in the arrangement of one's appearance. The word's context likely derives from the Middle Ages sport of falconry and has its roots in the same word as the modern "to prune" and "to pin".
7. Roll on and take away another letter from the previous word and get a group of people that are your equal.

Answer: Peers

For a moment, we will pretend that there is a person or group of people who have the same characteristics or status as you. These people would be your peers. A popular usage of the word is to describe the pool of people fit to judge the quilt or innocence of a common person in a court of law, as in "a jury of one's peers". Peer is also used to describe a person holding one of the five titles within the UK feudal system or a person entitled to be called a Lord. Contrary to many people's belief, a Knight is not a peer.

The word peer derives from the Latin "par" or equal.
8. Drop another letter and become a person that can predict the future.

Answer: Seer

Seer is a noun to describe a person who can predict the future or provide prophesies about future events. The modern connotation of the word is often said derisively. In ancient religions, the seer or oracle was an important element of civilization. The belief that certain blessed individuals could divine or know the future of events was a central tenant in Greek and Roman mythology. Perhaps the most famous of these ancient seers, was The Pythia, better known as, the Oracle of Delphi.
9. As we get close to the end of our ride, drop a letter from the previous answer and find the word that explains how you know the station is approaching.

Answer: See

I bet you did not "see" this one coming. Alright, maybe you did. To see is a common word that describes the act of perceiving something with your eyes; or, the understanding of the sensory input. Seeing can also mean to visit, as in "I will see you later" or to act as an escort as in "see you them to the door".

As a noun, the area given to a Roman Catholic Bishop to govern is a See. The origin of see is likely from Latin "sequi" meaning to follow, rather than "video" which is the Latin equivalent of seeing.
10. Our word roller coaster now stops, but before you leave please drop one more letter from the previous answer and give me a "word" that is allowed in the games Scrabble and Words With Friends, and seems to mean the letter "s"?

Answer: Es

Apparently there were not enough two letter words, so anagram and word game rule makers decided that "es" was now a word, meaning the representation of the letter "s". In any event, ES is also the chemical symbol for element number 99, Einsteinium, named for the great German physicist Albert Einstein. Einsteinium is almost exclusively a laboratory created element.

It can be no coincidence, that neither es nor Einsteinium appear naturally.
