Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For example: 'Feline with the actors in a play' would be 'cat cast'. Note that no comma, or punctuation of any kind, is needed. Now try these: Move down and find a blossom.

Answer: Lower flower

Lower can be used as a verb or adjective, and means to be nearer the ground relative to another item. It can also mean to look threatening, perhaps referring to a dark sky, or even a look on someone's face - describing a sullen look. Flower refers specifically to the (usually) brightly coloured part of a plant although is often used to describe the whole plant.
2. Disappear to see a shiny coating.

Answer: Vanish varnish

Vanish means to become invisible or disappear from sight. In the English language the word dates from the late thirteenth century having derived from the French, who adapted it from Latin. Varnish is a resinous coating applied to wood to preserve it. In British usage, it is also used to describe nail polish, which is called nail varnish.
3. Bletchley Park codebreaker travelling around.

Answer: Turing touring

Alan Turing was one of the experts based at Bletchley Park during the Second World War who broke the code of the German's Enigma machine. He was portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2014 film 'The Imitation Game'. Touring means to travel, usually for pleasure while on holiday, from place to place to see as many different parts of a country (or several countries) as possible.
4. Greek god of the woods found a chess piece.

Answer: Pan pawn

Pan is a minor god of Greek mythology, depicted as having a human head and body with the legs of a goat. His head usually has the horns and ears of a goat to add to the effect. As well as looking after the woods, Pan is also the god of fields and sheep and is adept at playing the pipes which bear his name. A pawn is one of the pieces used in the game of chess.
5. A piece of T-bone left a narrow mark.

Answer: Steak streak

A steak is a thick slice of beef which is usually grilled. Fillet steak is one of the most expensive cuts of beef you can buy and is renowned for its tenderness. A streak can be a smear, often of dirt, perhaps on a freshly painted wall. It can also refer to the practice of running unclothed in public, or an uninterrupted run of events - perhaps good, as in a lucky streak, or bad, as in a losing streak of games for your favourite team.
6. Where you can clean yourself before baking a collection of biscuits.

Answer: Bath batch

A bath, usually found in a room imaginatively named a bathroom, is where you can have a long soak to remove the grime from your body. Bath is also the name of a city in Somerset, England, which was named Aquae Sulis in Roman times. The Romans actually built baths in Bath.

A batch refers to any set of baked goods produced at one time, such as a batch of twelve cakes, or bread rolls or, as given in the definition, biscuits.
7. An Eminem song leaves a dirty mark.

Answer: Stan stain

'Stan' was the title of a hit single, released in 2000, for Enimen. It featured a sample of Dido's song 'Thank You' and reached the number one position in many European countries, although not in America. A stain can be literal, as a smudge on clothing which is hard to remove even with repeated washing, or a symbolic one - 'a stain on someone's character'.

The word derives from fourteenth century Middle English, via the Old Norse word steina.
8. Your heart, informally, could lead you to an adhesive label.

Answer: Ticker sticker

A ticker is something which beats at regular intervals, so it's easy to see why the word has been used for the heart. It can also describe a wristwatch or be used for ticker tape, produced by a telegraph machine. A sticker describes anything that sticks, such as a label on goods for sale in a shop. It can also be used for a person, who perseveres at a particular task.
9. Lift up to extol.

Answer: Raise praise

Raise means to elevate to a higher position or elevate. You could raise your hand to attract someone's attention. The word dates from twelfth century Middle English. If you praise someone you are expressing approval of them. You could 'sing someone's praises' by telling others of their good qualities and achievements. It has the same roots as prize.
10. Storage vessel had a bad smell.

Answer: Tank stank

A tank usually refers to a large storage container, often for liquids but also for gases. It can also describe a large, armoured, tracked vehicle used in warfare. The word derives from either, or possibly both, the Portuguese language or the Gujarati word for a reservoir. Stank is the past tense version of stink, meaning an offensive stench.

It can be used literally or figuratively, to describe, perhaps, a badly written book. The word has been around a long time, from about 900 - the Old English version was stincan.
