Mewsical Mewtations Trivia Quiz

No, this isn't a quiz about a Webber musical. It's about ten finicky felines who think that while some melodies are purrfectly fine, changes ought to be made to the lyrics. If cats were able to re-write songs, what would the titles be?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Fogerty wrote most of the big hits for Creedance Clearwater Revival - but not this one. Released in 1968, it became their first song to make it into the U.S. Top 40, reaching number eleven. Jinsai the Japanese Bobtail "likes the way you walk and the way you talk" but would like to change the name of this song to what?

Answer: Sushi Q

According to Jinsai, "Peaceful Easy Feline" would be a hit by the Eagles. The other three are CCR songs. "Susie Q" (spelling varies by artist) was originally written by Dale Hawkins in 1957, with cover versions recorded by the Rolling Stones, Everly Brothers, Linda McCartney, Velvet Underground and Flash Cadillac, amongst others. On CCR's first album the song was 8:37 in length, so rather than "chop" it when released as a single (remember this is back in the days of "45s") it was split in two, with half on the A-side and half on the B-side.
2. Sassy the Savannah cat loves a certain mewlody recorded by Gladys Knight and the "Kits", although she did change its name. Do you know what the song is?

Answer: Midnight Train To Garfield

"I'd rather live in his world than be without him in mine", sighs Sassy, "even if I DO hate lasagne". Written by Jim Weatherley, "Midnight Train to Georgia" was first recorded in 1972 by Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney, aunt to Dionne Warwick). Gladys Knight and the Pips covered the song one year later and had a huge hit with it.

"The Great Pretender" was made popular by The Platters, "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles and "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las.
3. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young had many hits, but which of the following might have been recorded by Neil Young as a SOLO artist if Harvest Moon the Maine Coon cat was watching Mother Nature on the run while doing the writing?

Answer: After The Gold Fish

"After the Gold Rush" was Neil's third solo (that is, NOT with CSN&Y) album. "Harvest" was his fourth. Most people think the song is about the environment but there's no point in asking Neil what the lyrics really mean. In his words: "H--- I don't know, I just wrote the thing".

"Woodstock" (originally written and recorded by Joni Mitchell) was a group recording by CSN&Y. "Me and Bobby McGee", co-written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, was immortalized by Janis Joplin on the "Pearl" album, released after her death. "Where Do The Children Play" was written and recorded by "Cat" Stevens who is, of course, one of Harvie's favourite song-writers.
4. Morris the Manx is watching a movie starring Val Kilmer that was about a famous musician who allegedly died of a substance abuse overdose. If Morris had a tail, it would be twitching to the tune of which of the following re-titled songs?

Answer: Hiders From The Storm

Like many animals, cats have an uncanny ability to sense when bad weather is coming. If distant thunder is heard, you can bet you'll not see hide nor tail of Morris for HOURS.

Val Kilmer starred (in the role of Jim Morrison) in the 1991 movie "The Doors", along with Meg Ryan and Kyle MacLachlan. "Riders On The Storm" was from the the 1971 album "L.A. Woman" and was Jim Morrison's last recorded/released song before his death.

As for the others: "Into the Mystic" (Van Morrison), "Nights in White Satin" (Moody Blues) and "Another Brick in the Wall" (Pink Floyd).
5. A movie was made posthumously about the life of a certain singer from Alabama. In it, his son (in real life) provided the vocals for George Hamilton (the actor who portrayed the father). Willy the Wildcat is a huge country music fan, but he still felt the "knead" to change the title of what song that will "tell on you"?

Answer: Your Cheetah'n Heart

Hank Williams is considered by many to be one of the greatest country artists/songwriters ever. Willy (the Nelson) Wildcat would not be alone in liking the classic "Your Cheatin' Heart" - even Rolling Stone included it in their top 500 songs of all time. Hank Williams died at the age of 29. His son Randall (Hank Williams Jr.) is a country star in his own right and was only 15 years old at the time he sang the songs that were dubbed in for the 1965 movie.

"By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was a hit for Glen Campbell and "All My Ex's Live in Texas" was by the tall dark and handsome George Strait. "Mule Train", astonishingly, was released by four different music artists in the fall of 1949 (Frankie Laine, Bing Crosby, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Vaughn Munroe).
6. Persnickety the Persian is an elderly cat, quite set in his ways. He likes everything except the title of a certain Beatles tune, but positively hated the 1988 take on it by Tiffany. Do you know what song he's so fussy about?

Answer: I Saw Her Shedding There

He might not have liked Tiffany's version of the song ("I Saw HIM Standing There"), but it did chart in the Top Ten in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Ireland. "How Deep is Your Love" was a hit by The BeeGees and "Tiny Dancer" was recorded by Elton John.

Persnickety's other Fab Four faves are: "Happiness is a Warm Lap" and "The Continuing Story of Burmese Bill". Persians have long, easily matted hair and require loads of grooming. If shedding bothers you, you'd best get a guppy or a newt as a pet instead.
7. Bruce Springsteen wrote and recorded this song for his first album, but Manfred Mann's Earth Band had greater success with the tune and managed a number one Billboard hit with it in 1977. Go-cart-Mozart the Mouser changed the title to what?

Answer: Blinded By The Lynx

Although Bruce wrote many hits, "Blinded by the Light" is the only one that earned him a number one Hot 100 placing as a songwriter. Along with many other songs, "Born in the USA" and "Pink Cadillac" did rather well for his bank balance. "Born to Run" is one of those others - and not a tune a cat would normally change the title of (unless it was "Born to Sleep", that is).

"Pink Houses" was a hit for John Mellencamp. Mozart was QUITE purr-turbed when he dropped his stage name of "John Cougar" in preference for his birthname.
8. Bob Dylan wrote/recorded this song for the 1973 movie "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". It's been covered by many - including Bob Marley, Eric Clapton and Guns N' Roses. Angel the Angora has changed its name to which of the following?

Answer: Kneading On Heaven's Door

"I Shot the Sheriff" was written by Bob Marley and famously covered by Eric Clapton. "Layla" (the rock song) was a hit for Derek and the Dominos and re-released 20 years later as an acoustic version on Eric's album "Unplugged". "Stairway to Heaven" was by Led Zeppelin.

"Knocking on Heaven's Door" was recorded by just about "everybody who was anybody" in the music biz. The Grateful Dead usually closed their tour shows with this song. With Mr. Zimmerman's permission, the lyrics were changed for a 1996 version of the song which was recorded as a memorial to the Dunblane school massacre in Scotland. On it, Mark Knopfler played guitar and backup vocals were sung by family members of the deceased. All earnings from this number one top-seller in the U.K were given away to various children's charities.
9. Jazzi the Jaguarundi loves to curl up and get comfy with any music by Ben E. King and The Drifters. In 1960, they recorded a song that has become a popular request of Michael Bublé fans. What mewtation did Jazzi make to the song title?

Answer: Save the Last Rat For Me

I realize, for profit purposes, that pet food companies want to appeal to the "tastes" of pet OWNERS. But if you asked a feline, they'd probably prefer Rodent Ragout and Moth Mash to "Turkey Feast a la Florentine" any day.

"Save the Last Dance For Me" was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and has been recorded by several people, including Buck Owens, Ike/Tina Turner, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Randy Meisner and (no kidding) Bruce Willis. By the way, Jazzi wants you to know that she thinks Michael Bublé has an okay voice, but she can't understand his success. "He's just a copycat", she sniffs haughtily. Cats can be SO critical - sheesh.

"The Tracks of My Tears" was recorded by (Smokey Robinson and) The Miracles. "Satin Doll" is a classic jazz song written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Marvin Gaye recorded the most popular version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine".
10. This song by the Rolling Stones, from the 1966 album "Aftermath" was never released as a single. It has been covered by The Who, Blind Faith, Streetheart, Del Shannon and Tina Turner. What does Sirikit the Siamese cat-of-a-girl think the title should be?

Answer: Under My Paw

Two (very different) songs called "We're Not Gonna Take It" were recorded by The Who and Twisted Sister. "Hysteria" was a hit/album by Def Leppard.

Despite it never being a hit single, "Under My Thumb" was played by the band from time to time during road tours, much to concert-goers "Sat-hiss-faction". It has the dubious distinction of being the song that was being performed when a fan was stabbed by "security" at one of their events. Having Hell's Angels members as bouncers was probably "re-thunk" after that.

Sirikit's absolutely and cat-egorically all-time favourite re-titled song by the Rolling Stones is, naturally: "You CAN Always Get What You Want".
