How Well do you Know Sequences? Quiz

Can you read between the lines? If so, try to decipher the logic behind these questions, which are basely purely on sequences and series, and which have been sprinkled with letter series, odd ones out, etc. as well. Best of luck and have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the number series : 0, 7, 26, 63, ?

Answer: 124

The rule is simple if you know your cubes.
Logic : Each number in the series is 1 less than the corresponding cube number.
For example : 0=1^3-1, 7=2^3-1, etc.
Thus, 5^3-1=125-1=124, which is the answer.
2. What should come next? : 1, 4, 12, 26, 56, 114, ?

Answer: 232

There are two logics that work here one after the other. The first is, "multiply by two, then add two" and the second is, "add two, then multiply by two"; as,
(1*2)+2=4 and (4+2)*2=12 and so on. Thus, the correct answer is (114+2)*2=232.
3. What should be the next letter? : J, F, M, A, M, J, J, A, ?

Answer: S

No calculations required! These are simply the first letters of the names of the months of the Gregorian calendar.
For example : J is for January, F is for February and so on, up till A for August.
The next month is September, so the required first letter is S.
4. Find a suitable number to replace the question mark : 4, 6, 9, 14, 21, 32, ?

Answer: 45

It's simply adding prime numbers!
Logic : Each new number is obtained by adding to the previous number the corresponding prime number.
For example : 4+2 (1st prime number)=6, 6+3 (2nd prime number)=9, etc.
Thus, the 6th prime number is 13, which, when added to 32, gives 45, which is the required answer.
5. Compute the next member of the given sequence : 4, 4, 12, 3, 36, 9, 108, ? (Hint: Try breaking it into two series and find how the resulting series are related)

Answer: 9

As the hint says, the above series may be broken up into two.
Series 1 : 4, 12, 36, 108.
Series 2 : 4, 3, 9, ?
Looking at these, we find that a number in the second series is the sum of the digits of the corresponding number of the first series. Also, each member in the first series is three times the previous member of the series.
For example : 12*3=36 and 3+6=9.
Thus, the next member would the sum of the digits of 108, i.e., 9.
6. Find a suitable letter from the alphabet to take the place of the question mark in : B,C,E,G,K,M,? (Hint: The letters correspond to a certain mathematical series.)

Answer: Q

These letters, when converted to numbers, actually form the prime number series, i.e., 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, etc. From the prime number series, the next member is 17. Therefore, the correct answer should be the corresponding letter, i.e., Q.
7. What is next in the sequence? : 89, 72, 14, ? (Hint: Think of digits!)

Answer: 4

The way to reach the solution is observing the digits. The actual logic is given below.
Logic : Each number in the series is the product of the digits of the previous number.
For example : 8*9=72 and 7*2=14.
Following the above logic, the answer is 1*4=4.
8. Which of the following can take the place of the question mark? : 1, 1, 2, 4, 7, 13, 24, 44, ?

Answer: 81

Taking three numbers at a time, a logic emerges.
Logic : Each number in the series is the sum of the previous three members of the series.
For example : 1+1+2=4,1+2+4=7, 2+4+7=13, etc.
Also, since 2 and 1 have less than three predecessors, we take two predecessors for 2 and one for 1, which follows the logic, as 1=1 and 2=1+1.
From this logic, the answer= 13 + 24 + 44 = 81.
9. What comes next? : 63, 8, 3, ?

Answer: 2

Add 1 and find the square root! This rule is stated as:
Logic : Each number=square root of (the previous number+1).
For example : 8=square root of (63+1) and 3=square root of (8+1).
Thus, the square root of (3+1)=the square root of 4=2, which is our answer.
10. Can you figure out what comes next in the sequence? : O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, ?

Answer: T

They are all the first letters in the names of the natural numbers, e.g., O is for 'One', T is for 'Two' and so on. Thus, the next letter after N for 'Nine' would be T for 'Ten'. Therefore, T is our answer.
