Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scorn animal organ

Answer: revile liver

One of the synonyms for revile is "vituperate" - a sadly neglected verb. The liver is one of the most complex organs in the human body. It is responsible for maintaining carbohydrate homeostasis - now there's a phrase to impress your friends with.
2. Choose chopped

Answer: decide diced

Decide has its roots in a Latin word "decidere" which literally means "to cut off". The verb "to dice" stems from the small cubes (plural of die) as the end result of "dicing" was to produce little cubes.
3. Weave liquid for writing

Answer: knit ink

Knit is from an old English verb "knitten" meaning to tie a knot. Ink has evolved from a Greek word "enkaiein" meaning "to burn in" as early inks worked by burning the paper and we now have "caustic" from the same root.
4. Entertain German beer

Answer: Regale lager

Not surprisingly the root of "regale" is French - "regaler" which in turn is related to "galer" (to entertain) which is where our word "gallant" comes from. The word "lager" comes from the German "lagern" which means "to store" and stems from the practice of storing the beer for between 6 weeks and 6 months in cool conditions
5. Insect bite from baby lice

Answer: sting nits

The singer Sting was given his nickname because of his propensity to wear striped shirts of yellow and black which made him look like a bee. A nit is also a measure of luminance. One nit is equal to one candela per square metre (1cd/m2) and 10,000 nits equals one stilb.
6. A long, sharp edged weapon in lines

Answer: sword rows

The Japanese are probably the greatest exponents of sword making. Some of their weapons were so well made that they were handed down through families for generations and were still being used, often several hundred years later, in the Second World War.
7. The days in which we live give out

Answer: times emit

The Times (also known outside the UK as "The London Times") was first published in 1785 as "The Universal Daily Register", changed its name to "The Times" in 1788 but did not carry any news on the front page until 1967! Until then, the front page only carried classified advertisements.
8. Play the part of a reed

Answer: enact cane

Cane comes from the Latin "canna" which is still the name of a genus of highly decorative plants which belong in the same order as Arrowroot and Ginger.
9. Significant other - ensnare

Answer: Partner entrap

Closely related to the word "partner" is the much more rare "parcener" which is the name of a joint heir to an estate. Partition also comes from the same root.
10. Goods brought to the door are detested

Answer: delivery reviled

Deliver comes from the same root as liberty and liberal in the sense of "making free"
