Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "DIVORCES" Clue: to find unexpectedly.

Answer: DISCOVER

Discover means to find a place, an object or information for the first time. To get knowledge of something previously unknown. Discover is also a synonym of to expose, to make known.

We learned at school that Christopher Columbus discovered America but everything indicates that the Vikings were in America long before Columbus.
2. "DEMEANOR" Clue: to be in love.

Answer: ENAMORED

Enamored means full of passion, in love; to be captivated, infatuated. This word was borrowed into English from the Old French verb "enamourer", derived from "en + amour". I was wondering if it is correct to say "enamored of" or "enamored with" and I verified that both forms are accepted. We may also be interested, fascinated, enamored with something for example: I'm enamored with my new house.
3. "CONDUITS" Clue: a reduction in the usual price.

Answer: DISCOUNT

The word discount refers to price reduction, deduction, to sell at a reduced price. Discount also means to decide that something or someone is not worth paying attention to, is not important.

Retailers significantly discount their products on Black Fridays.
4. "DESIGNER" Clue: showing acceptance that something unpleasant cannot be changed.

Answer: RESIGNED

Resigned often means having a feeling of submission, acquiescence, being patient. Resigned also can mean that someone voluntarily left a job, a position, gave up.

Richard M. Nixon decided to resign from his post in view of the possibility of impeachment.
5. "AGONISED" Clue: to ascertain the cause from the symptoms.

Answer: DIAGNOSE

To diagnose is to identify the nature of a problem or disease based on facts, symptoms or by medical examination. The word diagnose was first used in medicine to mean "run a diagnosis". You can use diagnose for other problems; for example you can diagnose family breakdown as a cause of criminality.
6. "MEDICATE" Clue: to kill a large number of something.

Answer: DECIMATE

Decimate means to inflict great destruction, reducing greatly the total count of something. The word comes from Latin and referred to a punishment used by the Roman army that in case of rebellion, one of every ten rebels was killed. It is now accepted that the word decimate is used in a broader sense, meaning killing a large proportion of the population.

Some purists find this usage incorrect.
7. "CREDITOR" Clue: the head, the controller.

Answer: DIRECTOR

Director is a member of a group, an organization, etc. who oversees and manages the activities. In general, the position of director in entities and companies is a temporary position. In cinema, to be a director is to dedicate yourself to a career of directing movies.

There are famous directors and among them we can mention: Orson Welles, Wim Wenders, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, Pedro Almodóvar, Giuseppe Tornatore and Alfred Hitchcock.
8. "PROVIDES" Clue: to demonstrate to be false.

Answer: DISPROVE

Disprove means to be false, invalidate, debunk, refute, confute, discredit. Louis Pasteur and other scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries helped to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation. It is a key step in the Scientific Method.
9. "MISSHAPE" Clue: special stress laid upon something.

Answer: EMPHASIS

Emphasis means attention, importance, prominence, significance that is attributed to some fact, to something. The COVID-19 pandemic placed special emphasis on research for both vaccines and therapeutic drugs. Someone can claim that countries which place more emphasis on research are more likely to find a vaccine quickly.
10. "RENEGATE" Clue: an adolescent.

Answer: TEENAGER

Teenager or teen is a person aged between 13 and 19 years old. The word is often associated with adolescence. It is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood. How this period is recognized or defined changes across different cultural groups and over time. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines adolescents as people aged between 10 and 19 years old.

Being a teenager is sometimes not easy, but one thing I'm sure: I miss the time when I was a teenager. And you, my dear Trivia colleague, do you miss your adolescence?
