Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Example: A word meaning obese + a flying mammal. Answer is Fat Bat. Now over to you: A word meaning vulgar and rough + An equine

Answer: Coarse horse

Coarse can refer to materials that, to the touch, feel rough and rather prickly. If referring to a person, coarse means that person is vulgar, loud-mouthed, common, boorish and uncultured.

Horses are four-legged mammals with tails, manes, the ability to gallop very fast, that are suitable for riding just for pleasure, and with the capacity to work their loyal little hearts out at jobs requiring strength and obedience.
2. A word meaning ridiculous + An avian

Answer: Absurd bird

If anything is described as absurd, it means that it is ridiculous, laughable or preposterous. Avians are two-legged birds, with the majority - but not all - capable of flight. These are almost all feathered and with sharp beaks and claws as well. Penguins are a notable exception to this. Though classed as birds, they cannot fly, for their wings have evolved into flippers.
3. An exclamation of astonishment and delight + A bovine

Answer: Wow cow

"Wow!", along with similar expressions such as "Gosh! Golly! and Kewl! (which I absolutely detest), and other more trendy expressions all indicate astonishment or delight at something unexpected or new. A cow is normally looked upon as a domesticated farm animal with the ability to produce milk for human consumption.

The female counterpart of several other animal species such as whales and giraffes are also referred to as cows.
4. A word meaning inexpensive + An ovine

Answer: Cheap sheep

If any product or services is described as cheap, it hasn't cost you an arm and a leg. Cheap is an adjective that can, more rarely, be applied to behaviour and dress as well. Ovines are woolly four-legged mammals that have the miraculous ability to produce wool that can be shorn to make clothing and other products for the use of mankind. That really is amazing when you think about it.

Then they simply grow more. Some poor old baa-baas are also bred for the dinner table as well - but not as guests.
5. A state in Malaysia + A South American camelid

Answer: Malacca alpaca

Malacca is located in the south of Malaysia near the strait that bears the same name. Originally a small fishing village, this area grew to become a very important trading centre over several hundred years. Today, however, it is valued more for its historical significance, and, to that end, has been on UNESCO's World Heritage Site since 2008.

Alpacas are South American mammals from the Camelid family of animals. These easy to maintain creatures were originally domesticated for their fibre which was, and is, used to make an astonishing assortment of products. Here's an interesting snippet for you: Alpacas, when defecating, use a communal dung pile. The male alpacas are particularly tidy in this regard as their dung pile is used by all, building up into a neat heap. The females, though certainly organised in this regard, all tend to line up, one behind the other, to use theirs. Unfortunately though, when the one at the top of the line goes first, this sets off a chain reaction, and all the other ladies follow suit.
6. A word meaning scarce + A formic creature

Answer: Scant ant

Anything that is scant is in low supply, and subsequently in most cases, in high demand. Does the scantness, though, create the demand - or the demand the scantness? Economists work on this principle to a degree. Does over-supply create cheaper prices and more employment? Does under-supply cause unemployment, but creates demand which then sends prices up? Which creates inflation? Which creates deflation? Don't ask me. I can't even get my own budget to balance.

Ants are insects that evolved from wasps of all things. Did you know that? I didn't. This took place almost 100 million years ago "after the rise of flowering plants" according to the encyclopaedia. Today there are very, very few places on our planet that haven't been colonised by ants. They're busy little hard-working group creatures indeed, and in a way, could almost be described as the communists of the insect world.
7. A word meaning mouth wide open in astonishment + A tailless simian

Answer: Agape ape

To stand agape is, as explained above, to have one's mouth wide open, with dropped jaw, at some startling revelation or another. Apes are primates from Africa in the main, but can also be found in the south-east of Asia. The easiest way to tell an ape from a monkey and other primates is that apes do not have a tail. Neither do we - but that doesn't make us apes - unless you're a Charles Darwin devotee.
8. A word meaning crooked and unstable + It carried Mary to Bethlehem

Answer: Wonky Donkey

Wonky is a rather cute word that describes anything as being wobbly and crooked. A person sitting on a wonky bar stool, for example, if the stool doesn't immediately break, could be just as wonky and wobbly as that stool after more than a few rounds of drinks. Pisa's famous leaning tower could even be described as wonky.

A donkey is an adorable little relative in the family of horses. This hard-working little creature has been used as a beast of burden in many countries for several thousand years, but sadly, is often very cruelly treated by its owners no matter how hard it strains its little heart out. Completely and utterly barbaric.
9. A word meaning a scrounger or beggar + A musteline animal

Answer: Cadger badger

A cadger is anyone who obtains money, food or gifts by begging. Many of these people seen in poorer countries do so out of genuine need. In more affluent countries, "professional" cadgers have been known to ply their trade as a means of earning easy money. Of course, they may also be genuine, poor souls who are suffering from mental illness perhaps, or are homeless and without the ability to hold down paid work. Ultimately then, it is not up to us to make any harsh judgement calls on same.

Badgers belong to the family that includes wolverines, polecats and weasels. These normally nocturnal animals are rather cute to look at, but I wouldn't get too close if I were you. They'll attack if feeling threatened and can really bite. Man has been very cruel to badgers over time, using these little animals in blood sports, but fortunately today, in England at least, they are now protected. It strikes me that human beings, in spite of all our acquired knowledge and scientific advances, are at times the most barbaric and savagely cruel creature of all. But to finish on a lighter note, did you know that badgers, if having consumed fruit that has begun to rot, can sometimes becomes extremely intoxicated? That's rather funny.
10. British overseas territory + Large fierce fish from the genus Sphyraena

Answer: Bermuda barracuda

Bermuda is located about 1,000 miles off the south-east coast of the United States. This country is a British overseas territory, a fact I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't know. Nor did I know its location and thought it was to be found in the Caribbean Sea instead. Oh dear, that's disgraceful, but then, as far as geography goes, I've always been a wonky donkey.

Barracudas are alarming-looking, large fish that have a reputation for their savage behaviour. They can usually be found near coral reefs of most countries. With sharp and vicious teeth, barracudas can grow to a frightening size. Classed as predators, they kill their prey by ripping off large chunks of their flesh. A delightful prospect when going for a dip in the ocean. Though they don't normally attack humans, it's true, barracudas can sometimes mistake them for prey, particularly if said humans are spearfishermen and have wounded fish thrashing about frantically on the end of their weapons.
