quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Straw _______ bush?

Answer: berry

Strawberry, berry bush. The memory of my Grandma Raymer's strawberry shortcake still makes my mouth water. She made the shortcake part from Bisquick and grew the berries in her own berry patch. The whipped cream was freshly whipped--not that kind that comes in spray cans and tastes like chemicals.
2. Tomato _______ pan?

Answer: sauce

Fresh-made tomato sauce is the best. I use olive oil, lots of garlic and onions, basil, fresh-ground pepper, skinned, seeded tomatoes, and roasted red bell peppers.
3. Dead _______ market?

Answer: meat

"You're dead meat!" means "You're in trouble!" "Meat market" is slang for a sleazy a bar or disco where people go to locate not-so-romantic partners. Ever since I read "Fast Food Nation," I've been trying not to eat much meat. Also correct: dead fish and fish market.
4. Tea _______ River?

Answer: spoon

Edgar Lee Masters wrote the "Spoon River Anthology," published in 1916. In it, dead people (ghosts, I guess) from a fictional town write their own poetic epitaphs, revealing truths they never shared while they were alive.
5. Navy _______ bag?

Answer: bean

Navy bean, beanbag. Remember beanbag chairs? Navy beans are small white beans, also known as Yankee beans. They are a staple of New England cuisine. Also correct: navy blue and blue bag (used in people's washing machines).
6. Button _______ cloud?

Answer: mushroom

Button mushrooms are small ones. A mushroom cloud is the result of a nuclear blast. I hope we never see another one.
7. Cream _______ cracker?

Answer: soda

Cream soda, soda cracker. Cream soda is a vanilla-flavored fizzy drink beloved by New Yorkers. Saltines are soda crackers. (You nibble them with sips of ginger ale when you feel ill.)
8. Green _______ dome?

Answer: onion

Many Russian Orthodox cathedrals have onion domes.
9. Square _______ ticket?

Answer: meal

A square meal is a healthy, hearty one. "She's his meal ticket," means that she supports him financially.
10. Alphabet _______ spoon?

Answer: soup

Alphabet soup, soup spoon.
11. Coffee _______ cake?

Answer: cup

Coffee cup, cupcake. (Makes me hungry for a nice steaming cup of French roast and a freshly-baked yellow cupcake with buttercream frosting.) Also correct for you Brits: coffee cream and cream cake.
12. Home _______ show?

Answer: cooking

"Home Cooking" is the title of a cookbook/essay anthology by Laurie Colwin. If you find it, read the chapter called "Repulsive Dinners: A Memoir." It is laugh-out-loud hilarious. Colwin also wrote several novels and "More Home Cooking." My boyfriend's favorite cooking show is with Jacques Pepin. Mine was with Julia Child, but she doesn't seem to be on much these days. Send me your favorites and I will add them in here. So far, players' favorites include "Iron Chef" and....
13. Flap _______ boots?

Answer: jack

Flapjacks are pancakes. Jackboots are military boots that rise to the knee or higher (Nazis in the SS wore them).
14. Figgy _______ head?

Answer: pudding

Figgy pudding is of course Christmas pudding with figs (made famous by the carol "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"). Mark Twain published "The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson" in 1893. Mr. Wilson earned his nickname when, irritated by a noisy dog, he told townspeople that he wished he owned half of the hound.

When they asked why, he replied that then he would kill his half. Listeners thought this was evidence of pudd'nheadedness.
15. Tuning _______ lift?

Answer: fork

Tuning fork, forklift. A tuning fork is a two-pronged device that emits a steady tone when you strike it--you use it to tune musical instruments. A forklift is a vehicle that hoists and carries heavy loads by lifting them with steel "fingers."
16. Swiss _______ whiz?

Answer: cheese

Swiss cheese, cheese whiz. It's actually spelled Cheez Whiz. This "cheese food" by Kraft is, as far as I can tell, a marriage of cheddar cheese and glue.
17. Easter _______ nog?

Answer: egg

Easter egg, eggnog. When this quiz was written, the eggnog season was fast approaching. My stepmom makes the yummiest, richest homemade eggnog with beaten eggwhites. It's served warm with nutmeg and brandy. My favorite children's book about Easter eggs is called "The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes" by Du Bose Heyward and Marjorie Flack (illustrator).

It was originally published in 1939. It's about a female Easter bunny (a women's libber among rabbits) who becomes a successful Easter egg delivery person despite being the mother of many, many small bunnies (who all pitched in and did the housework while Mom was delivering eggs).
18. Daily _______ pudding?

Answer: bread

"...Give us this day our daily bread...." I make a delicious Cajun bread pudding made with sweet French bread, butter, eggs, apples, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. NO raisins! (I hate them.) You serve it with warm whisky sauce made with butter, sugar, and whisky.
19. Hot _______ chip?

Answer: potato

Hot potato is a kids' ball game. I love unsalted potato chips made by a company in Washington state called Tim's. Hot chocolate, chocolate chip is an alternative answer to this one.
20. Black _______ break?

Answer: coffee

Black coffee, coffee break.
21. Cat _______ farm?

Answer: fish

Catfish, fish farm.
22. Cotton _______ cane?

Answer: candy

Cotton candy, candy cane. I used to love watching those cotton candy machines at amusement parks and fairs. The vendor would hold a hollow paper stick and move it round and round in a vat of blowing, swirling candy wisps until a giant muff of cotton candy formed. Usually it was pink, but sometimes it was other pastel colors like light blue or lavender.
23. Formal _______ bell?

Answer: dinner

Formal dinner, dinner bell.
24. Wing _______ meg?

Answer: nut

Wing nut, nutmeg. Wing nuts have little wings that allow you to screw and unscrew them. Nutmeg comes from an evergreen tree native to the Moluccas. It's a spice people use more often during the holidays (for pumpkin pie, eggnog, and such).
25. Cow _______ eyed

Answer: pie

Cow pies can be found anywhere there are cows. To be pie-eyed is to be drunk. Thanks for taking the quiz. I haven't seen many of these Before and After ones in awhile, though they were all the rage on funtrivia.com at one time. (Did you notice that the title and the last Q both have to do with pie and poop?)
