Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of six letters is the name of the paper on which you make your choice of the candidate running for election.

Answer: Ballot

There are many ways to vote nowadays, from electronic systems to mail-in ballots, but the general idea behind the ballot is that you have listed on it the candidates from which you can choose, and by marking your ballot, you can cast your vote 'in secret', or privately.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is a ring-shaped coral island.

Answer: Atoll

An atoll is an island made of coral which surrounds a lagoon. These islands are typically a complete (rough) circle, but sometimes there is an opening to the open sea. They originate from the leavings of undersea volcanoes that once broke the surface, but have since gone extinct, and eroded or subsided beneath the sea level.
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes a member of the saxophone family.

Answer: Alto

Invented by Adolphe Sax in the late 19th century, the saxophone family has 14 different variants of the instrument, although only six are in regular use today: sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass saxophones.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a hot drink that sounds like a large amount of something.

Answer: Lot

The word 'lot' is of Germanic origin and originally had the meaning of 'the portion assigned to someone' (like the saying "That's your lot in life."). The other senses of the word have extended from that original definition.
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to come up with a preposition indicating motion in a given direction.

Answer: To

'To' came from the Old English and, as it does today, carried the meaning 'in the direction of, for the purpose of, furthermore".

But, what's it 'to' ya, anyways?
6. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the letter that represents a universal blood donor.

Answer: O

There art eight possible blood types, and O positive (no A or B markers, but with Rh factor) and O negative (neither A or B markers, nor Rh). The O negative blood type is considered the universal donor, able to donate to all types of blood carriers (A, B, AB & O).
7. Now add a letter to make a word that is a party or social event.

Answer: Do

From the Germanic in origin, through Old and Middle English, we have received the word 'do' with the meaning of "to put, place, make".

Using the word as an informal term for a party or event is related to 'a big to do' or 'much ado about nothing', with the idea of something happening that is of note.

What 'do' you think?
8. Add a letter and rearrange them to make a word that describes a poem that is meant to be sung.

Answer: Ode

In the classic use of the term, an ode was a lyrical poem meant to be sung, although in more modern use, it is often just a rhymed lyric, addressed to something (or someone), and dignified.
9. Add another letter and rearrange them to make a word that is a type of small, wild pigeon, popular at weddings.

Answer: Dove

Doves come from the Colombidae family, which is basically broken down to pigeons (typically larger) and doves (usually smaller). Doves, especially white ones, have come to symbolize peace and love.
10. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to describe what action you have taken in the election - a right, a privilege, and a responsibility?

Answer: Voted

The ability to vote has been fought for by many over the years (enfranchisement), and there are still many cultures and types of governments in the world where the populace have no say in how their government is formed or run. If you are among the fortunate to be able to cast a vote and have a voice, you should exercise the privilege.

For this, and future elections.
