Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of 8 letters is a contagious itching skin disease.

Answer: Ringworm

Ringworm, also known as dermatophytosis, is a fungal infection of the skin. It is not, despite the name, caused by parasitic worms.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes the process to rid your pet of intestinal parasites.

Answer: Worming

Worming DOES deal with parasitic worms, such as roundworm or tapeworm. The process of worming (or de-worming) is also called drenching.
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means using oars to move a boat.

Answer: Rowing

Row, row, row your boat... not to be confused with putting things in rows, nor with getting into a fight.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means the opposite of correct.

Answer: Wrong

That's right, the answer is wrong! Old English meanings of the word are similar to the visual image of wringing something -- twisted / crooked.
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means tired or overused.

Answer: Worn

Other synonyms for worn include exhausted, spent, haggard and drawn.
6. Drop yet another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means immediately.

Answer: Now

At this present time... move on to the next question. I said NOW!
7. Lose a letter once again and rearrange the rest to make a word that is the opposite of under.

Answer: On

On is a very versatile word. It can be used as a preposition, an adverb, an adjective and in various idioms. Now, let's move on (see what I did there?).
8. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the first word of Canada's national anthem.

Answer: O

Not only the 15th letter of the alphabet, but also a useful interjection, o ye of little time who want to get to the next quiz.

And, of course, Canada's national anthem is "O Canada".
9. Now add a letter to make a word that differentiates between choices.

Answer: Or

We can spend time talking about this word, OR, we can continue with more interesting info after the next word.
10. Add a letter and rearrange them to make a word that is what caviar is made from.

Answer: Roe

There is hard roe (ovary of a female fish filled with mature eggs), and then there is soft roe (testis of a male fish filled with mature sperm). Caviar, typically, is made from the hard (unfertilized) roe of sturgeon. The word 'caviar' has its origins in Persia, where the word referred to both the sturgeon AND its roe.
11. Add another letter and rearrange them to make a word that is mildly painful.

Answer: Sore

Writing too much information in a Brain Teaser quiz makes my brain sore.
12. Add yet another letter and rearrange them to make a word that is the back side of a page.

Answer: Verso

The front side is called the recto, and the back side (or left-hand page) is called the verso.

The Latin terms translate as right (recto), and turned (verso).
13. Now add a letter and rearrange them to describe small passerine birds commonly found throughout the Americas.

Answer: Vireos

Within the genus Vireo there are at least 32 recognized species (according to Wikipedia). They are typically small and a dull greenish color, with some variance among the different species. They range in size from approximately 10 cm and 8 grams, to 17 cm and 40 grams.
14. Add the penultimate letter and rearrange to make a word that describes female reproductive organs.

Answer: Ovaries

Ovaries produce ova, or eggs, that if fertilized will grow and develop into an adult of the species. Not to be confused with roe.
15. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to describe veins that have become enlarged and tortuous.

Answer: Varicose

The term 'varicose' comes from the Latin varicosus, and means abnormally swollen or dilated. Commonly found on the lower legs, varicose veins occur when the leaflet valves in your veins (the ones that prevent your blood from flowing the wrong way) no longer connect properly.

This allows the blood to flow backwards and distends the veins. It is most common in the lower legs, due to high pressure of blood there when standing.
