Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of six letters is the name of a professional person much maligned in jokes, and often made rich in class action proceedings.

Answer: Lawyer

While it can be fun to make fun of lawyers, I certainly do not envy what they must go through to earn a place in the profession. In my home country of Canada, prospective lawyers must have a Bachelor's degree from a university (two or four years), followed by a Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized law school.

After that it still takes another six to eight years wherein a period of articling must be done (apprenticing at a law firm), followed by a bar admission course and exam. That, and getting a license in the province they intend to practice in.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means to receive something and then to pass it on.

Answer: Relay

Used as a verb, to relay something is to pass it on after you have received it. This could be information, a message, or an object (like the baton in a track & field relay race).

Relay can also be used as a noun, at which point it can be a device that is activated once an electrical current or signal comes from one circuit, causing another circuit to open or close.

Another use of the word relay as a noun describes groups that participate in activities for short periods of time before being replaced by others (completing the task in relays).
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that signifies the time it takes for our planet to orbit the sun.

Answer: Year

Our calendar marks a year at 365 days, but in reality it's closer to 365.24 days. This is why an extra day is added every four years (a leap year).
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is both a cereal grain and the alcoholic drink made from it.

Answer: Rye

Rye is a grain similar to wheat and barley, and is commonly used to make bread (including pumpernickel) and is often used as a fodder for livestock. Perhaps just as well-known a use for rye is the distillation of rye whiskey. In the US, rye whiskey must be made of at least 51% rye mash (often combined with barley and corn) in the process.

Other countries that produce rye whiskey have different requirements, and may not have as high a percentage of actual rye in their rye whiskey.
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to come up with the plural form of thou.

Answer: Ye

"Oh, ye of little faith". The old English 'thou' and 'ye' have been combined into the present-day 'you'. One is a reference to an individual, while the other is to a group.

Ye can also be another way of saying 'the', as in 'Ye olde bakery shoppe'.
6. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the sixth note of a G Major scale.

Answer: E

A G Major scale has but one sharp in its key signature (for the F), so the scale is actually quite a simple one: G A B C D E F# G. A G Major chord would not include an E, as only the root, third and fifth combine for the chord: G B D.
7. Now add a letter to make a word that is a typographical unit of measurement (width) equal to half the height of the given font.

Answer: En

The length of an en varies depending on the font size. If your font is 16 points high, then an en dash would be 8 points long (it's the short dash - when you're typing). Also when you put two parentheses together, (), the space between them is the length of an en.
8. Add a letter and rearrange them to come up with another name for the white-tailed sea eagle.

Answer: Ern

The ern (or erne) is a mostly greyish-brown sea eagle with (as you may have guessed) a white tail. The species was first classified by Linnaeus in 1758 and carries the binomial name of Haliaeetus albicilla.
9. Add another letter and rearrange them to make an ancient mark or letter of magic significance.

Answer: Rune

Runes are a written symbol language often used by writers as the language of Dwarvish races, but in Earth's history were commonly found in ancient Germanic tribes (3rd to 13th century).

The meaning of the term 'rune' as something mysterious or magical comes from the old English words 'rūn' (a secret, mystery) and the old Norse word 'rúnir' and 'rúnar' (magic signs, hidden lore).
10. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to give the name of a health care professional whose primary concern is the care of people to optimize their health and quality of life.

Answer: Nurse

Nursing has been around for a very long time, and is even mentioned in the bible. Modern nursing, however, can trace its origins to the Crimean War and Florence Nightingale. Her series of books called "Notes on Nursing" became very popular in subsequent years.
