Question 1 of 15
1. My friend Freddo Ford loves his chocolate. Problem is that he tends to eat too much of it. His favourites are the chocolate seashell shaped pralines made by the Belgian chocolaterie that was founded in 1960 by Guy Foubert.

Using seven letters identify the Belgian chocolate that Freddo loves so much.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 2 of 15
2. On one occasion Freddo ate so much chocolate that we thought he was going to burst. "I've eaten too much" he wailed "I feel like a hen about to give birth to a chocolate egg".

Remove one letter from the previous answer and rearrange the remaining six to create another word to signify a hen "giving birth" to an egg.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 3 of 15
3. "Holy glass and a half Freddo" I cried "how many chocolates did you end up eating"? "Not sure" he replied. He soon figured that if he put all his empty wrappers in a row we would be able count them easily.

Dropping another letter from the previous answer, rearrange the rest and identify a five letter word that identifies what Freddo did with his wrappers before counting them.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 4 of 15
4. "Oh no" lamented Freddo "with all that chocolate that I've eaten I'm sure to have added a few extra pounds to the already prominent spare tyre around my waist".

Now drop another letter, scramble what remains and create a four letter word that describes what Freddo has achieved in respect to his weight.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 5 of 15
5. The thought of his pudgy midriff started to give Freddo the blues and as a means to get rid of them he stared longingly at a bottle of alcohol sitting on his shelf.

Drop a letter from the previous answer and you will arrive at the spirit, made from juniper berries that Freddo had fixed his gaze upon.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 6 of 15
6. Freddo got the message that alcohol was not the answer and declared "I will go to bootcamp and put myself through a physical exercise regime. I'll be fit and trim just like that Marvel Comics action hero ... um ... "something something Joe: A Real American Hero".

The something something that Freddo was struggling to remember represent which two letters from the previous answer?

Answer: (One Word)
Question 7 of 15
7. Freddo showed up at bootcamp, took one look at the exercise routines and the colour soon drained from his face. Pretty soon he found a couch, collapsed into it and allowed inertia to set in.

Remove one of the above letters. This should leave you with one letter and it will represent the symbol for the moment of inertia (physics).

Answer: (One Word)
Question 8 of 15
8. Words of encouragement have worked and Freddo is off the couch. He's left the building and gone for a jog. Actually it's more of a stumble with wheezes but at least it is working for him. Within a couple of weeks he's lost 25.4mm from his waistline.

If you add a letter to the previous answer you will arrive at the abbreviation for the imperial measurement that 25.4mm represents.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 9 of 15
9. Not being the strongest of wills there were moments when Freddo would waver in his training. At times like these his girlfriend Cherry would castigate him "you have no heart Freddo, just like that man from L. Frank Baum's "Land of Oz"".

Add another letter to the previous answer to identify the man that Cherry was referring to.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 10 of 15
10. Cherry went away for a week and Freddo slipped off the wagon. Discipline went out the window when he spotted a pub and dropped in for a couple of beers.

Add another letter to the previous word, mix them around a bit and create the word that would represent, in imperial measurements, the size of glass that Freddo was drinking from.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 11 of 15
11. When Cherry returned and found out about Freddo's indiscretion she was ripe with anger, in fact, she was hopping mad (both puns intended). "You're a baby chicken" she yelled at him "you're a mottled little bean. In fact, you'd have to be one of the worst Fords ever"!

Don't cringe, just add another letter to the previous answer and arrive at a word that would sit comfortably with all three insults Cherry levelled at Freddo. (Hint: It's the word for baby chicken in another language, a type of bean and a Ford model).

Answer: (One Word)
Question 12 of 15
12. "Either you pull your finger out or I'm walking out" cried an indignant Cherry. "That is your alternative".

What was Freddo left with here? Add another letter to the last word and rearrange them to find out.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 13 of 15
13. That was the cruncher for Freddo. He would be lost without Cherry and he knew it. A steely resolve took control of him and he began to exercise with regularity and intensity. He took care about what he was putting into his body and even though he ate often he would balance this by making each helping smaller.

Now, while Freddo is on a mission to lose, I need you to add another letter to the previous answer, twist them a bit and find an alternative word for Freddo's helping.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 14 of 15
14. Freddo was starting to look leaner, fitter and a lot more alert but he did give us a terrible scare along the way. He was on his day off, having a rest, when he suddenly grabbed at his chest. Fearing a heart attack we rushed him to the hospital but, after checking his system for certain protein levels, the doctor determined that it was unstable angina.

Add another letter to those above and rearrange your new set to find the name of the test that the doctor ordered. It is also the name of the protein that binds the calcium ions within your contracting muscle tissue.

Answer: (One Word)
Question 15 of 15
15. "Don't do that again" begged a tearful Cherry "you nearly gave me a heart attack". What it drove home to both of them though, was that they had to listen more closely to the signals their bodies were sending them and not to work to the extremes. There should be rewards along the way for their efforts and so, every once in a while, Freddo and Cherry sit back and watch the sun set while enjoying a glass of red wine made from a grape that is usually associated with the Burgundy region of France.

Add a final letter to our progression, mix them up and split them into two words to identify Freddo's favourite red wine.

Answer: (Two Words)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: GUYLIAN

Foubert was the son of a baker, from the town of Sint-Niklass, and he created the name of his chocolaterie by joining his Christian name (Guy) with a shortened version of his, then, wife to be's first name (Liliane). Their trademark, a seahorse, has its tail curling in the opposite direction to that of a normal seahorse.

Answer: LAYING

Cadbury Australia markets a cute little chocolate called the Caramello Koala, a koala shaped chocolate with a soft caramel centre. Being based on an Australian animal the chocolate has reminded me that Australia also has the only two mammals in the world that lay eggs. These are the echidna (spiny anteater) and the platypus.

Answer: ALIGN

Ducks in a Row is a winery that was established in 2009 within the popular wine making region, McLaren Vale, in South Australia. They specialise in grape varieties that are not widely grown in Australia and dwell on the fringes of the market. These include varieties such as Vermentino and Fiano.
4. "Oh no" lamented Freddo "with all that chocolate that I've eaten I'm sure to have added a few extra pounds to the already prominent spare tyre around my waist". Now drop another letter, scramble what remains and create a four letter word that describes what Freddo has achieved in respect to his weight.

Answer: GAIN

A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70-85% contains approximately 11 grams of fibre and the majority of your daily allowance in respect to iron (67%), magnesium (58%), copper (89%) and manganese (98%). But be warned, 100 grams of dark chocolate is a heck of a lot of chocolate to be eating each day and you should definitely think twice before making it a major part of your diet. "Are you hearing me, Freddo"?

Answer: GIN

The Vesper is a gin based cocktail created by secret agent James Bond in Ian Fleming's 1959 novel "Casino Royale". In the 2006 film version of the book, Bond, played by Daniel Craig, instructs the barman to mix "three measures of Gordon's (gin), one of vodka and a half of Kina Lillet (French aperitif wine)". This was to be shaken until it was ice cold and poured into a champagne goblet with a long thin slice of lemon peel. In the novel, Fleming extends the banter between Bond and the barman by having Bond inform the mixologist "if you can get vodka made from grain instead of potatoes it will taste better".

(Warning) to Freddo and others; Alcohol may mask your blues for a short term but it will not provide a long term solution to your issues. It won't hurt to talk to your families and friends or seek some professional guidance.

Answer: GI

Instead of trying to look like a G.I., Freddo may have been better advised to look after his GI or Glycemic Index. This Index categorizes carbohydrates according to the way they influence your blood sugar levels. For example; low GI foods (those having a value of less than 55) will promote only a small rise in blood sugar levels. Dark chocolate has a GI level of 23, which means it will help in stabilising blood sugar levels rather than sending them to a massive high before bringing them crashing back to the ground. One or two small squares may be the ideal way to finish one of your daily meals.

Marvel's version of GI Joe was based on Hasbro's action toy line that ran from 1982 through to 1994.

Answer: I

In physics, inertia is the tendency for a body to remain in a state of rest. It is waiting for some external force to be applied to it to produce motion. A moment is that turning force. The moment of inertia measures the resistance that the resting body has to the external force. Hmm, I wonder if a kick up the backside is the external force that Freddo needs to get rid of his inertia. Maybe I'll try some words of encouragement first.

Answer: IN

IN is short for an inch. "Inch by Inch" has now become Freddo's motivational slogan. He has painted this on his wall and, as an added stimulus, has hung a poster of Thomas Inch underneath it. Thomas, who passed away in December 1963, was once known as Britain's Strongest Man and had a 172 pound dumbbell named after him.

Answer: TIN

The Tin Man was originally a man by the name of Nick Chopper who used to chop down trees for a living. The Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on his axe which would cause him to chop off his limbs, one at a time. Nick, with the help of a tinsmith by the name of Ku-Klip, would replace these lost limbs with ones that were made of tin. Unfortunately, between the two of them, they forgot to replace one vital part and, as a result, the Tin Man could not fall in love.

Answer: PINT

When the Europeans changed their advertising laws so that only metric weights and balances could be reflected on packaging, Cadburys were required to remove their most famous slogan "a glass and a half" (of full cream dairy milk) from the labels of their Dairy Milk bars. In its place they now record "426 ml of fresh liquid milk in every 227g of milk chocolate". The iconic logo of the glass and a half, which has served the company well for over 80 years still remains.
In case you're wondering; the 426 ml of liquid doesn't add up to a UK imperial pint which is 568 ml. The US customary pint measures 473 ml.

Answer: PINTO

Pinto, as a substantive, in the Portuguese language means baby chicken. The pinto bean is the most common bean in the United States and the north western regions of Mexico. The Ford Pinto was a subcompact motor car that was released in the decade between 1971 and 1980. It met with criticism from the outset and in 2004 the "Forbes" business magazine recorded it on its list of "The Worst Cars of All Time". Its competitor, "Business Week", placed it in its "Ugliest Cars of the Past 50 Years" compilation in 2009.
12. "Either you pull your finger out or I'm walking out" cried an indignant Cherry. "That is your alternative". What was Freddo left with here? Add another letter to the last word and rearrange them to find out.

Answer: OPTION

Options or choices can be the somewhat misleading. We've often heard of the term "Hobson's Choice", which essentially says "take it or leave it". Another way of saying it is "something or nothing". The two are not equivalent options. A dilemma is sometimes (erroneously) called a "Hobson's Choice". Hobson's gives the chooser the option to walk away whereas in a dilemma both options are unlikely to be attractive. A false dilemma differs again as here the elector only considers two choices when there may be other options available.

Answer: PORTION

Alternatively we could have used words such as plateful, chunk, wedge, serving or piece. Interestingly piecemeal has little to do with meals. It means doing something one bit at a time, a bit like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. Peasemeal, on the other hand, is flour created from the grinding of roasted yellow field peas. The roasting increases the pea's nutritional value as it draws out a greater amount of its proteins and starch. The caramelization brought on by the roasting gives the flour a lovely brownish yellow colour.

Answer: TROPONIN

Troponin is a combination of three regulatory proteins that are essential to muscle contraction within the skeletal and cardiac systems. By checking for the levels of two subtypes (cardiac troponins I & T) the doctors can determine if there is damage to the heart. An increase in the levels is a good indicator of damage though not necessarily by way of a heart attack. The test is likely to be conducted about three times over a 12-16 hour period before a diagnosis is confirmed.

Answer: PINOT NOIR

There will be all sorts of arguments from a range of quarters about the benefits or the evils of the occasional glass of wine. This writer has no inclination to go down that path apart from saying "to each, his own".

My friend Freddo is of the view that "what's the point" of all this effort if you cannot occasionally indulge in one of the world's finest varieties of wine. Pinot is not an easy grape to grow. It tends to form into tight clusters, which makes it susceptible to an array of rots and vine diseases. It also contains a lower level of phenolic compounds which leads to an uneven aging process. Despite this it produces such a broad range of textures and tastes that it led Madeline Triffon, a master sommelier, to describe it as "sex in a glass".
