Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beloved and long-running BBC series "Doctor Who", David Tennant plays the tenth Doctor, the replacement (or "regeneration") for ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston. What was his first line as The Doctor?

Answer: "Hello. New teeth."

He continues with "So where was I? Oh that's right. Barcelona." The ninth Doctor had been discussing a holiday to Barcelona - the planet, not the city - with his companion Rose before he died as a result of... well, a very complicated scenario involving a kiss that saved Rose from burning up with an excess of cosmic energy.

The tenth Doctor gets straight back to the topic as soon as he's fully formed.
2. As the tenth Doctor, David Tennant says "Allons-y!" a lot. (It means "Let's go!" in French.) In fact, he admits he's always wanted to say "Allons-y, Alonso!" To whom does he get to say this?

Answer: A midshipman on the Titanic

Although Don Quixote's name was, in fact, Alonso, the Doctor is addressing Midshipman Alonso Frame, portrayed by Russell Tovey, in the 2007 episode "Voyage of the Damned". This is set aboard a space cruiser called "Titanic".
3. In December 2011, David Tennant, known for playing the tenth Doctor on "Doctor Who", married Georgia Moffett. What is the odd coincidence about this match?

Answer: Moffett's father also played the Doctor.

It gets odder. Georgia Moffett is the daughter of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. However, she also played Jenny, the daughter of Tennant's Doctor (actually a sort of clone) in the 2008 episode "The Doctor's Daughter". So she is a daughter of the fifth Doctor and married to the tenth.
4. What is the name of the harrowing four-part television drama of 2010 that starred David Tennant as Dave Tiler, a widower trying to raise four children?

Answer: Single Father

The heart-wrenching plot begins when Dave Tiler's wonderful wife Rita, mother of three children with him and a fourth by a previous partner, is killed riding her bicycle to an important meeting. It follows Dave's attempts to hold his family together without her, and his growing relationship with a married friend.
5. In 2008, at the height of his popularity as the tenth Doctor in BBC Television's "Doctor Who", David Tennant starred in the title role of a Royal Shakespeare Company production of a classic about betrayal, madness and revenge. What was the play?

Answer: Hamlet

The stage production was adapted for television for the BBC in 2009. The TV production used the original cast members, including Patrick Stewart ("X-Men", "Star Trek"), who played both the ghost of Hamlet's dead father and Hamlet's usurping uncle Claudius.
6. David Tennant played a prominent role as an investigator in a six-part British musical comedy-drama about a murder in an arcade at an English seaside town. What was it called?

Answer: Blackpool

Tennant played D.I. Peter Carlisle, called in to investigate the murder that is central to the plot... which thickens when he finds himself attracted to Natalie Holden (played by Sarah Parish), the unhappy wife of the disagreeable arcade owner. The series was aired in some markets under the title "Viva Blackpool".
7. David Tennant is seldom cast as a villain; one exception was his twitchy portrayal of the psychopathic Barty Crouch, Jr. in one of the "Harry Potter" movies. Which one?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

In the film, Barty Crouch, Jr., who has apparently been rendered barking mad by a term at Azkaban Prison, tries to manipulate the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts School to aid the evil Lord Voldemort. Tennant writhes and licks his lips neurotically in the role: a truly scary performance!
8. How many episodes of the "Doctor Who" spinoff show "Torchwood" did David Tennant appear in?

Answer: None

"Torchwood" (which is an anagram of "Doctor Who") is an institute of the British government set up by Queen Victoria to protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats. "Torchwood" regulars John Barrowman (as Captain Jack Harkness) and Eve Myles (as Gwen Cooper) made guest appearances on "Doctor Who", but Tennant (as The Doctor) never appeared in the series.
9. Which famous romantic historical character did David Tennant play in a 2005 British television series?

Answer: Casanova

"Casanova" was written by Russell T. Davies, who was also the head writer for "Doctor Who". Tennant played a young Casanova, with Peter O'Toole as his older self.
10. In "Doctor Who", the tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, has a Cockney accent. However, what part of the UK is Tennant really from?

Answer: Scotland

The "Doctor Who" episode called "Tooth and Claw" is set in Victorian Scotland (truly Victorian; Queen Victoria is a character!). The Doctor "pretends" to be Scottish, calling himself "Dr. James McCrimmon" and using his own accent, which does not fool the "real" Scottish characters. (The name, incidentally, is an insider's joke, as "Jamie MacCrimmon" was a recurring character in a much earlier incarnation of "Doctor Who".)

Tennant was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.
