Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lleyton Hewitt, tennis player extraordinaire, married which Australian soap star in 2005?

Answer: Bec Cartwright

Bec and Lleyton married on the 21st July 2005. Lleyton Glynn Hewitt was the youngest person ever to be ranked Number One tennis player in the world in November 2001 (aged 20 years). Bec was one of our best loved soapie stars in the series "Home and Away" during the period 1998 to 2005, playing the character Hayley Smith Lawson. Ada and Kate, fellow cast members, were her bridesmaids when she married Lleyton.

When their first child, a daughter named Mia, was born it seemed as though they were on the cover page of every magazine in print! Bec won the first "Dancing with the Stars" series in 2004 and the much coveted Gold Logie award as Most Popular Personality in 2006.
2. Russell Crowe is a somewhat cranky Academy Award winning actor. Whereabouts did his marriage to Danielle Spencer take place?

Answer: Nana Glen, near Coffs Harbour

Russell and Danielle were married at their property near Coffs Harbour in a chapel that they had especially constructed for the event. Wellington, New Zealand was Russell's birthplace but he is now an adopted Australian. Russell won the Oscar for Best Actor for "Gladiator" in 2000. Danielle had a part in "Home and Away" in 1995 playing the character Quinn Jackson and is the daughter of long term "Play School" presenter Don Spencer.
3. Which much loved celebrity, whose career started with the advent of television in Australia, has the nickname "Moonface"?

Answer: Bert Newton

Albert Watson "Bert" Newton was dubbed "Moonface" by Don Lane in 1975 and boy did the name stick! Bert was the second banana on "The Don Lane" show and a highlight were the costumes he donned to send up guests on the show (remember him as Demis Roussos?).

He probably kept working because he admitted a gambling problem in 1993 and had to file for bankruptcy! Bert has won four Gold Logies for his work on "The Don Lane Show" and as the host of "New Faces". Trevor Maramalde is known for propping up the bar on "The Footy Show" and John Burgess had the nickname of "Baby Face".
4. Known as "Eddie Everywhere", which celebrity is a fanatical supporter of Collingwood Football Club?

Answer: Eddie McGuire

Eddie earned the nickname because at one point he was hosting two weekly shows, "The Footy Show" and "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", as well as hosting Friday Night Football and the Sunday afternoon AFL match. As well as these weekly commitments, he also headed just about "every" special event on Channel Nine, and became the President of Collingwood Football Club! It seemed that every time television was on, his face appeared! After relinquishing the reins on "The Footy Show" he enjoyed a stint as Channel Nine CEO until his resignation from that role in June 2007.

While Eddie was host, "The Footy Show" won two Silver Logies for best Sports Programme, in 2002 and 2003.
5. Well you can't have a Aussie celebrity quiz without "Our Nic", so here we go. Nicole Kidman was barely recognizable in one of her first films, back in 1983. What was the title of this story about young peddlers?

Answer: BMX Bandits

The story line involved two BMX riding mates finding a box of walkie talkies tuned to the police channel and a pair of inept robbers doing all they could to retrieve them. Nicole played their friend, Judy. Needless to say, the boys and Judy triumphed in the end! Her hair was red, long and wildly curly and her face freckled.

She certainly has come a long way since 1983. Nic has been nominated for several Academy Awards and finally won in 2003 for her portrayal of Virginia Wolfe in "The Hours".
6. Which actress, known for her strong support of animal rights, demonstrated early acting skill by faking appendicitis (so convincingly that it was removed) at the age of eleven?

Answer: Toni Collette

Obviously quirky, even as a child! The appendix was found to be perfectly healthy after removal. Toni first came to prominence in "Muriel's Wedding" (1994) when she gained forty pounds in ten weeks to play the role of Muriel and squeeze herself into the famous ABBA suit. Toni was nominated for a Golden Globe award in 2006 for "Little Miss Sunshine" and received an Academy Award nomination in 1999 for "The Sixth Sense".

Her first child was born in 1998, a daughter named Sage.
7. A description of this celebrity could read "Australian Megastar with wolfish good looks proclaims he is just a boy from Oz". Who is this hunk?

Answer: Hugh Jackman

Mmmm...Hugh Jackman it is! It seems that there is nothing this man cannot do. He is a star of stage and screen, sings wonderfully and could probably give the Mr Universe title a shake as well. His mother abandoned the family when he was 8 years old and he and his four siblings were raised by their father.

He attended The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth and graduated in 1994. The description in the question pertains to his leading role in "Australia", his role as Wolverine in "X-Men" and his stage role as Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz", for which he won a Tony Award in 2004.

He is also an Emmy winner for his role as host of the Tony Awards ceremony in 2005.
8. This quartet has won the hearts of preschoolers around the world. Who are these men who have a big red car?

Answer: The Wiggles

The Wiggles wearing tops coloured red, blue, yellow, and purple are an entertainment phenomenon globally. The four members Anthony Field (blue), Murray Cook (red), Jeff Fatt (purple) and Greg Page (the original yellow, now replaced by Sam Moran following Greg's retirement for health reasons in 2006) developed the famous finger wiggling after watching Australian cricket bowlers use the same gesture to signal delight at taking a wicket (some sources believe the finger wiggle was related to a ten pin bowling gesture of pleasure). As two of the Wiggles are huge cricket fans, the cricket link is most likely.

Field, Page and Cook were all preschool teachers and wanted a pose for photos that did not involve the touching of their little fans and the finger wiggle was perfect. Sam Moran had been an understudy for the team for five years before taking over the yellow geurnsey. They have earned 17 gold records, 12 platinum records, 3 double platinum records and 10 multi-platinum records.
9. Which internationally famous fashion model was the face of "David Jones" marketing campaign?

Answer: Megan Gale

Megan Gale was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1975 and won a modelling competition while studying at university, which led to her securing a contract with Italian telco Omnitel and becoming immensely famous in Italy. Her sultry green eyed, brunette looks have led to her being compared to Sophia Loren. Although now retired from catwalk modelling she will be forever remembered as the ambassador for the upmarket David Jones department store. Megan became the national ambassador for "Kids Helpline" in 2005.

Elle and Gemma are both international models and Jennifer was Miss Universe in 2004.
10. This man has rigged a coat-hanger, sucked on a sauce bottle and shown American hoodlums what a real knife looks like. Who is this Australian celebrity?

Answer: Paul Hogan

Paul Hogan, who moved to California USA, was a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge (affectionately known as "The Coathanger" to Sydneysiders) before the launch of his comedy show "The Paul Hogan Show" in 1973. The Aussie ockerisms, such as the phrase "Oi, fair suck of the sauce bottle" entered the Australian vernacular and soon Paul was a ratings star.

In 1986 he starred in "Crocodile Dundee" and in a "fish out of water" scene set in New York City he scared the pants off some street kids by producing a knife of mega proportions.

He married Linda Kozlowski, his co-star in the film, in 1990. During the 1980s he was involved in a USA based advertising campaign promoting tourism to Australia and the phrase "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" will be long remembered.

In 1985 Paul was named Australian of the Year and honoured with an Order of Australia.
