Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This actor reached the pinnacle of success when he was nominated for an Oscar for playing Charlie Chaplin before sinking into drug and alcohol abuse. Who is this actor who was able to get his bearings and swim back to the top of his profession playing a metallic superhero and the quintessential detective?

Answer: Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. began his career in the 1980s and won critical acclaim for his acting in "Less Than Zero" (1987). His breakthrough role came two years earlier in "Tuff Turf" opposite James Spader. This led to numerous other roles including 1992's critically acclaimed "Chaplin".

By the end of the 1990s living the fast life that success allowed had finally taken its toll with Downey being arrested numerous times on drug offenses. It took Downey five years, more arrests, and the threat of real prison time before he was able to finally clean up his act and get sober.

The summer of 2008 marked Downey's return to the spotlight and his first real blockbuster success as he starred in two of the biggest movies of that year, "Iron Man" and Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder".

He went on to star in Guy Ritchie's blockbuster "Sherlock Holmes" in 2009. In 2010 he starred in "Iron Man 2" and in 2011 he starred in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows".
2. It was a "Red Dawn" when this actor jumped into the ocean and swam to Vietnam where he became a part of a "Platoon". Over the years he has sunk deeply into partying with hookers, drugs, and alcohol. Who is this actor whose most self-destructive move may have been attacking his bosses and getting fired after becoming the highest paid actor on TV?

Answer: Charlie Sheen

1984's cold war inspired movie "Red Dawn" was Charlie Sheen's first role, an ensemble movie. His first starring role was in Oliver Stone's "Platoon" (1986). Charlie went on to more movies and more success which brought with it the temptations of illegal drugs and prostitutes. In 1995, he was linked to the notorious Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss. In 1997, he pleaded no contest to charges of battery against his then girlfriend Brittany Ashland. In 1998, he entered court ordered rehab for the first time. Over time his partying has become legendary.

In 2000, he turned to the small screen and took over for Michael J. Fox on "Spin City". That lasted two years. In 2003, he was hired for "Two and a Half Men" opposite Jon Cryer. The show became the number one comedy on TV and Charlie became the highest paid actor on TV. Then in January 2011 Sheen again entered rehab but this time in his home. At this point things began to unravel and Charlie went on a tirade against the series creator and producer Chuck Lorre. CBS and Lorre fired Sheen and replaced him with Ashton Kutcher.
3. Mickey Rourke hit it big in the 1980s before self-destructing in the 1990s because of the choices he made in his personal life and the fact that he was difficult to work with on the set. After sinking to the depths he made a comeback in 2008 in the movie "The Wrestler". Of the four people listed below, which one does Mickey NOT give credit to in helping him make his comeback?

Answer: His psychic Madame Bovary

Mickey Rourke first and foremost credits his dogs with keeping him sane when he was at his lowest and even went so far as to thank them in 2009 during his Golden Globe acceptance speech. In numerous interviews he has credited his agent David Unger, his psychiatrist 'Steve', and a Catholic priest 'Father Pete'. His psychiatrist has never been named but the priest is Times Square priest Father Pete Colapietro.

Rourke was considered a natural actor who inspired a generation of actors who followed after him. His initial success in such films as "Diner" (1982), "Rumble Fish" (1983), "The Pope of Greenwich Village" (1984), "Year of the Dragon" (1985), and "9 1/2 Weeks" (1986) was critically acclaimed. But he turned to drugs and other destructive behaviors during this time and became persona non grata in Hollywood. He took a break from acting and became a professional boxer in the early '90s. When he realized his boxing days were over he returned to acting but it was not until his role in "The Wrestler" that his comeback was complete. He has since starred opposite Robert Downey Jr. in "Iron Man 2".
4. Which star of both the big and small screens has excelled in his professional life while sinking in his personal life most notably in a tirade left on his daughter's (Ireland) voice mail and then after getting kicked off of an American Airlines flight for refusing to turn his phone off (he was playing "Words with Friends") and berating the flight crew?

Answer: Alec Baldwin

Professionally Alec Baldwin has been consistently active on stage, on TV and in movies since the '80s. He started on the Soap Opera "The Doctors" and from there branched out. Alec's problems stem from his personal life. During a messy, bitter divorce from Kim Basinger, the two became embroiled in an ugly custody battle. Baldwin told his side of the story in the book "A Promise to Ourselves". The book documents Baldwin's assertion of custodial interference over a seven year period. At one point during this time, Baldwin left a message on his daughter's voice mail that he says was left out of frustration. He called his daughter terrible things and the tape was released to the public. A firestorm erupted around Baldwin and he was put on the defensive.

Whether or not the accusations against Kim are true, it is clear Alec has an anger problem as evidenced by his run in with the flight crew on an American Airlines flight in December of 2011. Although there is some difference of opinion about exactly what happened, Baldwin was removed from the flight because of his behavior and American Airlines stood behind the actions its employees took. Baldwin took to Twitter and American Airlines responded to defend the actions taken.
5. This actress was thrown into the deep end at age six when her role in a movie that made Reese's Pieces famous catapulted her to superstardom. Unprepared for the pressures she quickly sank so that by age thirteen she was in rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. After hitting bottom she swam back to the top as both an actress and producer even starting her own film company Flower Films. Which actress is this that starred in and produced "Charlie's Angels"?

Answer: Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore started acting at the tender age of 11 months. Her breakout role was in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" at the age of six. In the movie Reese's Pieces played a major role and the candy took off. Exactly what kind of a parent Drew's mother was during her childhood is unclear but the fact that Drew ended up in rehab at such a young age and won emancipation from her mother at the age of 15 would seem to indicate that there was less than stellar parenting going on.

She gained sobriety but still went through a rebellious period during her teens that played out in the public eye.

At age 20, however, she took control of her life and career and founded Flower Films. The company has been very successful, allowing Drew the freedom to pursue her own course in Hollywood.

Her autobiography of her childhood "Little Girl Lost" told the story of her tumultuous childhood but clearly her next autobiography could be titled "Strong Woman Found" as she has overcome all of her problems and is now a successful actress and businesswoman.
6. At the pinnacle of success as the first African-American Miss America her world came crashing down when nude photos of her were published. Forced to resign her crown, she refused to sink under these pressures and went on to become a Grammy-nominated singer and award-winning actress of both movies and television. Who does this describe?

Answer: Vanessa WIlliams

After the debacle that was Vanessa's reign as Miss America, she turned first to music. In 1988 she released "The Right Stuff" which was at first a success on the R & B charts before the third single crossed-over onto the pop charts. Her third album "The Sweetest Days" (1994) had the greatest success of her young career. Vanessa has also acted in both movies and on TV. Two of her more noteworthy film roles were appearing opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Eraser" (1996) and in "Soul Food" (1997) with Vivica A. Fox.

Her most notable TV role was as Wilhelmina Slater on "Ugly Betty" (2006-2010). She also became a regular on "Desperate Housewives" in 2010 through 2012.
7. This rocker extraordinaire became a rock god in the 1970s before sinking into drug abuse and ending up in rehab in the late 1980s. He has since gone on to play himself in a couple of episodes of "Two and a Half Men" as Charlie Sheen's neighbor and has judged future singing talent on "American Idol". Who is this rocker who might sing "Swim This Way" in the context of this quiz?

Answer: Steven Tyler

Aerosmith formed in 1970 with Steven Tyler as the front man and lead vocalist and Joe Perry playing lead guitar. As with almost any band coming out of that era, they embraced the rock and roll lifestyle completely. They rocked through the '70s until the lifestyle finally took its toll.

In the mid-80s they got back together and also decided to get sober. In 1986, the band held an intervention in which they confronted Tyler about going to rehab. After Tyler made it through rehab so did the other members of the band.

After this Tyler and Aerosmith rose to superstardom. One of their biggest hits was "Walk This Way" hence the reference in the question. They toured throughout the '90s and '00s. Tyler had to enter rehab again in 2009 for prescription painkillers.

In 2011, Tyler gained new legions of fans when he became a judge on "American Idol". Prior to this he played himself on two episodes of "Two and a Half Men" where he was Charlie sheen's annoying neighbor. He was mostly heard singing, much to the dismay of Charlie.

Although he has had his ups and downs, Tyler has proven he is a survivor.
8. Which actor known for playing a character that went by his last name but had the first name of Cosmo revealed in season six of the show, later sank into oblivion after a racially charged and profanity-laced exchange with hecklers during a stand-up routine?

Answer: Michael Richards

Michael Richards had bit parts and guest roles on TV shows throughout the '80s but is most famous for playing Cosmo Kramer on "Seinfeld" for nine seasons starting in 1989. He won three Emmys over the nine year run of the show. With a background in stand-up comedy, Richards returned to it after the show ended.

The incident in the question occurred November 17, 2006 at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. A camera phone caught the exchange and the damage to Richards' reputation and career were irreparable.
9. Jennifer Lopez has had a career filled with ups and downs but 2011 was a huge comeback year for her both in the music world and in pop culture with her stint as a judge on "American Idol". What was the main reason for J.Lo's drop off the scene for the three years prior to 2011?

Answer: Took time off to raise her twins

Jennifer Lopez has been written off numerous times for having come to the end of her career but each time she seems to reinvent herself and comeback stronger. She has been a 'fly girl' (dancer) on "In Living Color", a platinum selling recording artist, a fashion icon, a critically acclaimed actress, and a judge on "American Idol" beginning in 2011. In 2011, she released her seventh album "Love?" which featured the multi-platinum and multi-Number One hit "On the Floor". She has also starred in no less than 10 movies.

Lopez has had quite the eventful love life from being married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, and Marc Anthony to dating Puff Daddy, aka Sean Combs, and being engaged to Ben Affleck. Her break prior to 2011 was to raise her twins Max and Emme by then husband Marc Anthony.
10. The 'Bob Award' for this quiz goes to Paula Abdul who has had more ups and downs in her career and personal life than anyone should endure. She has been a choreographer, dancer, singer, and talent judge but how did she get her start?

Answer: As an LA Laker's dancer

Paula Abdul was discovered by the Jacksons while working as an LA Laker's dancer. They hired her to choreograph the video for their single "Torture" (1984). From there she worked as a choreographer for other singers, most notably Janet Jackson. She also worked as a choreographer on numerous movies, including "Big", "Coming to America", and "Jerry Maguire". In 1989, she became a multi-platinum recording artist when her 1988 album "Forever Your Girl" finally hit big. After taking a break from the spotlight and working behind the scenes as a choreographer for several years, Abdul returned to the spotlight as one of the first judges of "American Idol" along with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. She remained with the show for eight seasons. In 2011, she rejoined Simon Cowell as a judge on "The X Factor" but was dropped after the first season.

Besides her ups and downs in her career, Abdul has had ups and downs in her personal life. In the early '90s Abdul admitted to suffering from bulimia but finally conquered it by 1995. Throughout her run on "American Idol" there were questions about drug abuse and erratic behavior. She also was involved in a controversy with "American Idol" season two contestant Corey Clark who accused her of having an affair with him and coaching him. The Fox Network concluded there was little evidence to support the accusations.
