Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who's on trial for murder?

Answer: Gail Tempest

Her name is typical of character names in the Stooges series. Harry Thaw murdered architect Stanford White when he found out he had an affair with his wife Evelyn Nesbit, but he was sentenced to life in an asylum. Borden was acquitted of killing her parents. H.H. Holmes was the alias of mass murderer Herbert Mudgett, who was executed for his crimes. Suzanne Kaaren played Gail (uncredited). Jules White's brother Jack (as Preston Black) directed and Felix Adler scripted.
2. Who is the murder victim?

Answer: Kirk Robin

"Who killed Kirk Robin?" Yep, you gotta expect groaners when watching the Stooges! Miles Archer was killed in "The Maltese Falcon", Ackroyd met his in the landmark Christie mystery "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" and Manderson was the victim in E.C. Bentley's equally groundbreaking "Trent's Last Case". You know who did Archer in if you took my "Falcon" quiz, and you'll have to read the other two books to find out the murderers!
3. What job and where does the accused work at?

Answer: Dancer at the Black Bottom Cafe

She does a hot dance number later in the short when she demonstrates what she did at the time of the murder. The Derby and Trocadero were legendary California nightclubs back in the Thirties. The Dahlia was a fictional club in the 1946 mystery written by Raymond Chandler, directed by George Marshall and starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.
4. What dancer had an argument with the victim prior to the murder?

Answer: Buck Wing

Yep, another pun! Of the other three, only Sanine is a killer, the mad ballet dancer of the Ben Hecht story and film "Spectre of the Rose" (based on Vasily Nijinsky). Jerry Travers was Astaire's character in "Top Hat" and Ruby Keeler played Sawyer in "42nd Street".
5. When Curly's sworn in, what items of clothing give him trouble?

Answer: hat and cane

It seems Curly can't get rid of his hat and cane when trying to take the oath. He's told by the judge first to put his left hand on the Bible, then to take his hat off...this is classic Curly!
6. When asked to "drop the vernacular", what does Curly think it means?

Answer: his hat

"Vernacular? That's a doiby!" Curly, of course, plays his trademark ding-a-ling. The attorney means for Curly to stop speaking in slang. But Curly drops the hat, of course!
7. When playing music for the demonstration of the crime scene, Larry plays violin (as he did in real life), Moe a miniature harmonica. What does Curly play?

Answer: spoons and bass

First Curly plays the spoons on his leg then switches to the bass; he sends the bow into the prosecutor's mouth at one point! By hurdy-gurdy I mean the string instrument with a cranked wheel, not the barrel-organ most associated with the name. The cimbalom is the Hungarian hammered dulcimer played in Kodaly's "Hary Janos"; Rozsa used it in his chilling score for "The Power". Wouldn't it be fun to see Curly mishandle those instruments?
8. What does Larry snag on his violin bow?

Answer: the court clerk's wig

When Larry sees the wig he shouts "A tarantula!" And the Stooges try to kill "it"; finally Moe takes a cop's gun and shoots it! And they let THESE guys in a courtroom?
9. What happens to Moe's harmonica?

Answer: he swallows it

Okay, the fourth one was out of left field! Actually, Curly thumps Moe's back and then he swallows it. But he spits it up again.
10. What does Curly get on Moe's nose?

Answer: chewing gum

When told to stop chewing his gum (Curly even puts his middle finger on his mouth to put it in!), Curly rolls it into a ball and tosses it away...on Moe's nose! Larry takes it off, stomps it and gives a crazy yell! "Hey, you're in a courtroom, not in the woods, Tarzan!" Moe snarls before pasting Larry.
11. What does the Stooges' parrot keep saying?

Answer: find the letter

The parrot refers to a note on his leg (how it got there we never learn) that reveals the real killer. "Rosebud is, of course, from "Citizen Kane", "Who's on First?" from the classic Abbott and Costello routine and "Who is John Galt?" from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged".
12. When the parrot gets loose, what does Curly do?

Answer: knock out the first row of the jury

Curly tries to knock the bird out with a hammer but winds up knocking out the first of the jury. Larry tries it too, but smashes his violin. And where would they find a can of salt (Morton or otherwise) in a courtroom? (though they brought hammers with them!)
13. How do they finally capture the bird?

Answer: wet him with a fire hose

Curly all but drenches the court before finally getting the parrot! A good thing they didn't try the other methods! (The Stooges using a falcon? Inconceivable!)
14. Who was revealed as the real killer of Kirk Robin after the chaotic climax?

Answer: Buck Wing

"Who killed Curt Robin? I killed Curt Robin! And not with my little bow and arrow! Don't try to find me, I'll be shuffling off to Buffalo! Signed, Buck Wing", reads Moe when they get the note. Sam Grunion is Groucho Marx's character in "Love Happy" and Mark Lewis the serial killer in the cult chiller "Peeping Tom". (But you knew that if you played my Michael Powell quiz!) Can you imagine CURLY committing a murder?
15. T or F: Moe and Curly's dad was in the jury box.

Answer: False

Sol Horwitz, father to brothers Moe and Curly Horwitz, visited them on the set but didn't appear in the jury box. He can be seen ten minutes into the film, 2nd from the right in the front row of the audience, wearing mustache, tie and glasses. Hope you liked the quiz, knuckleheads!
