The General (James C. Morton) asks this of Operators 12, 14 and 15 after they introduce themselves. Curly answers with the potomac poisoning remark, which earns him a scowl from Moe. During this sequence, notice the soldier behind Larry, Moe and Curly, whose only job seems to be to pick up their hats which keep coming off.

Answer: Duck, Dodge and Hyde

As Lt. Duck, Capt. Dodge and Maj. Hyde, the guys are to infiltrate the Confederates to find out whatever information they can.

A typical Curly remark. Judith uses the same line later when she says, "I'm making a cake, all by myself".

The Stooges give the countersign of 'Cumberland', but the sentry asks for another countersign. They say that Charlie gives the countersign. When asked by the sentry who Charlie is, they say he's the fellow who walks like this (with a limp). While demonstrating how he walks, they run off. Later while they're talking to another sentry outside of the Colonel's house, a fellow comes up and asks if they're looking for him.

They say no, why? He says he's Charlie, and he walks like this.

Answer: Buttz

While having mint juleps, the Stooges are discussing the war with Col. Buttz and gleaning information on troops and guns. Col. Buttz was played by Bud Jamison.

Answer: hot

Moe has written down information Col. Buttz has given them about the number of guns and men the Southern army has on a piece of cigarette paper. Curly uses that piece to roll a cigarette, but it burns rather quickly and he tosses it away, prompting his no-nonsense response to Moe's question.

Answer: a potholder

Judith is pulling one of the cake layers out of the oven and notices her potholder has a rip. She tosses it behind her where it lands in a pan on the table. Curly, thinking it's cake, adds it to the layer on which he's already spread jam. Judith was played by Phyllis Crane.

Answer: let me have your piece

These are some of the funniest lines in any of their shorts in my opinion. A potholder with feathers comprises the middle layer of the cake since Curly mistook it for cake, so needless to say, it's a bit difficult to chew. Moe says the cake tastes more like Southern Comforter to Curly after asking Judith what she called this cake. Moe asks Curly "Want some of mine" and "How's yours taste", to which Curly makes the replies, "No thanks, I'm stuffed already" and that his cake tastes like a mattress. Colonel Buttz, who hasn't eaten any cake, asks the opinion of the Stooges on battle plans, and when they try to speak, only feathers come out of their mouths.

Answer: Larry

Maj. "Bloodhound" Filbert (Theodore Lurch) has arrived at Col. Buttz's house. Col. Buttz says that the Major can smell a spy far away. Curly remarks to Moe, "I hope he can't smell 'em any closer". The Major comments that Capt. Dodge's father has arrived to try and trick them because he's suspicious. Larry excuses himself and returns in disguise as 'Pappy'.

The Major then comments that Capt. Dodge's wife is also there. Curly has to leave for that one and comes back as the Captain's 'wife'. Don't ask about the baby!

After running from the Confederates, the Stooges hide in what they think is a large tree trunk. When the Union starts firing on the Confederates, they pull away the camouflage to fire back and reveal that the Stooges are actually in a large cannon. They are fired back to their camp and land on the table just as the General is asking whatever became of Operators 12, 14 and 15.
