Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jim Rome has a radio show that airs from 9 AM-12PM PST every day called "The Jim Rome Show" This is how I became familiar with him. What is the nickname of his show?

Answer: The Jungle

"The Jungle" is a very original and unusual show to say the least. It has a "cult type" following and most people either hate Jim Rome and think he is an arrogant snob or love "Romie" (as his fans affectionately call him) and think he is absolutely hilarious.

His following are dubbed "The Clones" as they call the show and attempt to make their points in the same style Jim does. I am a fan of the show as I think his wit and sarcasm are hilarious, but I can certainly understand why many people dislike him, as his humor is very cutting edge.

When a new affiliate picks up him (and he is broadcast on over 200 as of 2003), he gives a disclaimer that you need to listen to his show for 2 weeks to give it a fair shake. This is because his content is so unusual that many people do not even know what he is talking about at first.

He even has his own "language" or "gloss" as he puts it, which can be found on his site www.JimRome.com. It is called the "Jungle Gloss" and is fairly comprehensive.
2. Between 1992-1998, Jim Rome had a talk show on ESPN2, called "Talk2." He angered a guest to the point where the guest, who was an athlete, actually attacked Jim. What is the name of this athlete?

Answer: Jim Everett

This was in 1994 when Jim Rome questioned his manliness by continuing to refer to him as Chris Everett (the woman tennis star). He was referring specifically, to a play in the 1989 NFL Championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, where Jim Everett, after being sacked many times, fell to the ground, without being touched on one play, during an all-out blitz. Jim continued to call him Chris and Jim Everett got angrier and angrier and dared to call him Chris one more time or he would attack him. Jim, who fancies himself as a "sports host with attitude" called him Chris again and Jim Everett attacked him, tossing the set furniture and grabbed him before it was broken up. Jim refers to this on his show all the time and has dubbed it "The Incident."
3. Jim Rome has offended quite a few atheletes over the years. Whom did he tell that being a good athlete does not automatically make someone a good person and then referred to the fact that the guest was not paying child support?

Answer: Lawrence Taylor

One thing can be said for Jim Rome: he pulls no punches. He was not afraid to get in anyone's face, no matter how he came across to the guest, the media, or anyone. During an episode of his Fox SportsNet show, "The Last Word", the actual conversation boiled down to this:Jim Rome: Are you a good father?(Lawrence Taylor: ARE YOU? (In an angered, heated voice)Jim concluded the interview by letting Lawrence know that he did not have any children, leaving Lawrence somewhat speechless.

He plays this clip on his show quite often.

He is now a proud father to his son Jake, but I don't think that Lawrence Taylor calls him for parenting advice.
4. Jim's second stint on ESPN has what as its name?

Answer: Rome is Burning

The airdate for this show: March 6, 2003 and appears once a week on Tuesday nights. He is a much more respected host and known worldwide throughout the sports and entertainment industry than he was back in his ESPN2 days. There are celebrities and athletes that even call themselves "clones" including Jim Lampley and Jay Mohr.
5. "The Jim Rome Show" is on over 200 radio stations in live format?

Answer: False

The Jungle is on over 200 radio stations, but some have it syndicated, while others do not broadcast the full three hours. Jim encourages people that listen to one of these stations to "bang their monkey". This is an example of Jim Rome's gloss. A "monkey" is the radio station's producer and "to bang him" is to repeatedly call the station, so that the "monkey" is forced to air the Jim Rome show during its regular time and in its entirety.
6. Which of the following Jim Rome analogies or "gloss" as he puts it, does not correlate to its correct meaning?

Answer: "Toke Girl" : Jennifer Capriati

There is a huge list of gloss on Jim's website and frequent listeners use this as their "language" when they call up and voice their opinion ("having a take"). One of the slogans of this show is, "Have a take and don't suck or you will get run". In English, this means to please bring a new, refreshing opinion to the show or he will cut you off and make fun of you.

The Barry Manilow reference to Joe Montana is due to their similarity in looks. He also calls him "China Doll" to suggest that he is fragile. "Mistake by the Lake" began with a reference to the Cleveland Cavaliers, suggesting that they had no heart.

However, it became the slogan for the whole city because "clones" often call and bash other cities to promote their own. Cleveland gets picked on quite a bit. "Edna" is a feminine form of "Mr.Ed", as he suggests that Nancy Kerrigan looks like a horse.

He refers to Jennifer Capriati as "Irie Jennifer". From Webster's Dictionary: Irie--(noun; pronounced /EYE-RAY/) marijuana, or marijuana user from a variant pronunciation of a Caribbean expression, meaning "all right," "how's it going?" or "goodbye," used by "Irie Craig" q.v. to describe his mood; reportedly the original Amerindian name for Trinidad, "iere") Jim Rome can be downright offensive and even though he has a huge following, many people think he is downright disgusting.
7. "Smack" is the term used for insults or verbal jabs on "The Jim Rome Show". Once a year, fans of the show call in and compete to see who has the best "smack". What is the name of this show?

Answer: The Smack Off

"The Smack Off" is an annual event when the most recognizable "clones" call in and get a chance to "bring their smack" in a timed competition. The winner has bragging rites for the entire year. A "clone" named JT won the contest in 1995 and within a year, earned him a spot on KMAX, hosting a show from 10 to midnight on Sundays.

He is now known as JT the Brick and has a nationally syndicated talk show as well as co-hosts an Oakland Raiders pre-game show with George Atkinson. The reference to Dig 'Em is from the Sugar Smacks cereal commercials and has nothing to do with Jim Rome.
8. There is a myth that Jim perpetuates constantly that if someone appears on his show, that good fortune will come to that person. Interestingly enough, it often comes true. What is the Jim Rome "gloss" term for this?

Answer: Jungle Karma

Many people come on the show and say, "Romie, I need some of your jungle karma." Rome always points out when this works, for example, Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks came on his show right before the 2002 season and the Mavericks started out 15-0. Rome constantly referred to this as he does with several other "jungle karma" instances.
9. Jim Rome has tour stops across the U.S. in the markets where he is played live and for the full three-hour show. Which city did he proclaim was "The Mother of All Tour Stops?"

Answer: Sacramento

Jim always announces a tour stop after building up suspense and dropping hints here and there for a few weeks. Major celebrities and athletes show up at these tour stops including Bob Costas, Mike Piazza, Wayne Gretzky, and Jay Mohr to name a few. After his visit to Sacramento, he dubbed it "The Mother of All Tour Stops".

When Jim likes something, he builds it up as hard as he blasts something when he doesn't. He gives "kudos" constantly where "kudos" is due and has been in 30 venues + to date and states that no other venue has compared to California's capital.
10. One last tidbit about the Jim Rome show is the re-sets that he does. This is where a current news item gets re-set as if it happened to a particular celebrity (usually at the celebrity's expense) and his fans e-mail or fax in hundreds of re-sets. The most popular re-set celebrity, by far, always has Jim telling the "clones" to stop sending them in or he will never read them again. However, what he is really doing is encouraging the "clones" to send more in. Some are very clever and amusing. What is the first name of this celebrity?

Answer: Orenthal

An Orenthall reset is probably too politically incorrect to give an example of here, but every time a celebrity is in the news for something like a DUI or domestic abuse, the Orenthal faxes come in like wildfire. Fuzzy Zoeller re-sets are also popular.
