Nimoy is the son of Ukrainian immigrants. He speaks fluent Yiddish, Ukrainian, as well as English. He was born March 26, 1931 into a lower income area of Boston where his father was a barber and his mother a homemaker. His first acting job was at the age of eight.

Nimoy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. One of his buddies during this time was American actor Ken Berry, who was in his unit.
