Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cartoonist, author and film writer wrote a book that uses only 50 different words and has only one word with more than one syllable?

Answer: Theodore Geisel

Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, wrote the immensely popular children's book "Green Eggs and Ham" to win a bet with his publisher that he could write a book that used 50 words or less. Although well known as a writer, Geisel worked for years as a cartoonist and drew propaganda posters for the Treasury Department and the War Production Board.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he wrote numerous propaganda films.
2. Multi-talented Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer for the rock group Iron Maiden, is/was also which of the following things?

Answer: A licensed Boeing 757 pilot

Bruce Dickinson, is not only the lead singer of Iron Maiden, but he is also a licensed Boeing 757 pilot. In 2008 he helped return a group of British RAF pilots in Afghanistan, and in 2006 he helped evacuate over 200 British citizens from Lebanon during the Israel/Hezbollah conflict.

It may surprise you even more to know that he is also a world class fencer, radio broadcaster, business owner, actor, and an author. While heavy metal music may not have been your cup of tea, remember not to judge a book by its cover, a man by his appearance or a generation by their music.
3. Which one of these actors is a former New York City firefighter who worked ground zero at the World Trade Center disaster in 2001?

Answer: Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi, was a former FDNY firefighter from 1980-1984. He showed up and worked 12 hour shifts for a week at the World Trade Center disaster long after he had gone on to a career in acting. He spent this week digging through rubble for survivors with other firefighters.

He declined to be interviewed or photographed and most of his fans are unaware of this aspect of his life. He was definitely not there for the publicity and is a true hero, no matter what your opinion of his acting.
4. Monty Python star Graham Chapman was also a licensed medical doctor.

Answer: True

Graham Chapman graduated from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School in 1966 and began practicing medicine. Despite being extremely intelligent, Chapman did not have a great bedside manner and was really not drawn to the field. Soon after graduation he met John Cleese and one of the great comedy teams was born.

He was one of the first celebrities to come out of the closet and publicly admit his sexual orientation. He was an ardent supporter of gay rights and animal rights. He made a much better entertainer than a doctor, of this I am sure.
5. Which one of these celebrities is/was an actor, musician, model and producer, and was charged with attempted murder in 1988?

Answer: Mark Wahlberg

Although sentenced to two years in prison for assault, celebrity Mark Wahlberg was originally charged with attempted murder after he committed an unprovoked, racially motivated attack in 1988. This was not the only time he was arrested for acts of violence in his youth.

He went on to be a Calvin Klein model, a member of the rock group New Kids on the Block, as well as a noted movie actor and producer. He went on to found the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation in 2001, which pursues the raising and distribution of funds to youth services and enrichment programs.

Some people believe him to be an example of why you never give up on the troubled youth of our time.
6. Which of these "Star Trek" actors served with the Canadian Army in World War II, and on D-Day, he killed two German snipers and was shot six times?

Answer: James Doohan

The next time you watch the 1960's television show "Star Trek" try and see if you can spot that Scotty, played by Canadian actor James Doohan, only has four fingers on his right hand. He lost one while he fought at Normandy during the D-Day invasion. He was shot six times, and had a bullet to his chest stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother.

He was an accomplished pilot, radio broadcaster, movie and television actor. He was one of the many unsung heroes of World War II, and upon his death his ashes were flown into space aboard the Falcon 9 rocket.
7. Which actor, at the age of 15, joined the circus, and worked as a lion tamer?

Answer: Christopher Walken

Christopher Walken is one of the few people who could claim to have been a child actor, dancer, screenwriter, filmmaker and lion tamer. As an adult, he appeared in many major motion pictures, television programs and theater productions. In 2006, he became the subject of a hoax controversy, when it was reported online that he was going to run in the next presidential election.

He is one of the few major modern movie stars that can boast a marriage of over 45 years despite the pressures of being a celebrity.
8. Which of these television celebrities was once the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio?

Answer: Jerry Springer

Born in Highgate England in 1944, Jerry Springer is a well-known television celebrity as well as a news anchor, actor, and musician. What many people may find surprising is that he was also the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1977. He was also a political campaign advisor to Robert F. Kennedy during his bid for the presidency.

His career also includes his 1995 album named "Dr. Talk" which consisted of his renditions of old country music hits. Despite being known for getting people to air their dirty laundry on his television shows, Springer is a very private man, who has been married to his first wife for over 40 years and is a die-hard New York Yankees fan.
9. Which of these men is a noted astrophysicist and author as well as a famous rock guitarist?

Answer: Brian May

Brian May is a British astrophysicist and author who specialized in the study of reflected light from interplanetary dust. He was the co-author of the scientific book "Bang!- The Complete History of the Universe" in 2006. He has a PHD from Imperial College and is also known for his tireless work on behalf of animal rights.

He is a noted stereophotographer and has a an asteroid named after him. But in spite of his many scientific works, he will probably be more famous as the extremely talented lead guitarist, and song writer, for the rock band "Queen".

As the title of this quiz states, "I Bet You Didn't Know"!
10. Scottish actor Gerard Butler is a trained veterinarian.

Answer: False

Heartthrob Gerard Butler graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in law and went to work at an Edinburgh law firm. One week before he qualified as an attorney, he was fired due to his problems with drugs and alcohol. He then went into acting and became an internationally known movie star.

He is a supporter of the Scottish football team Celtic and has donated time and money to charities which provide hot meals to the poor and disabled. Will he ever get his license? While he has the education and the training, it is not likely that he will finish his internship.
