She was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri, on July 16th, 1911, to Lela Owens and William Eddins McMath. The marriage was a rocky one and Ginger rarely saw her father after the divorce.

Her mother's love of dance and theatre eventually attracted Ginger, and she, too, caught the entertaining bug! She won a dance contest at the tender age of 14.
