Olivia Mary de Havilland was the firstborn of Walter Augustus de Havilland and his wife. Her cousin was Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, designer of the wartime Mosquito fighter.

Her father was a patent attorney, and he and his wife were living in Japan for his work.

When their mother remarried after their parent's divorce, Joan took her step-father's surname Fontaine with her into her show business career, while Olivia kept her birth name of de Havilland.

Olivia has been married twice. In 1946 she married Marcus Goodrich, and was divorced seven years later. She married a second time in 1955 to Frenchman Pierre Galante. They were married for 22 years.

She was spotted at age 18 in a school play of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by theatre production manager Max Reinhardt. He took her with him when he went to Warner's to produce a film version of the famous play. Olivia had parts in "The Irish in Us" (1935) and "Alibi Ike" (1935) before appearing as Hermia in Reinhardt's film.
8. Why did the studio temporarily suspend Olivia in the early 1940s?

Answer: She began to demand better roles

Olivia got tired of playing the same type of characters and began to demand meatier roles. Warner's suspended her for six months, and then demanded she make up the time lost at the end of her seven year contract. She sued the studio and won. Not only did she not have to make up for the lost time, the court handed down what is known as the "de Havilland decision" : studios were now limited to signing performers to seven year contracts, and those seven years would include any suspension time given.
9. Who did Olivia play in 1939's "Gone With The Wind"?

Answer: Melanie

Along with Maid Marian in "The Adventures of Robin Hood", kind and gentle Melanie in Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With The Wind" is probably Olivia's best known role.
