He attributed his problems to the cold weather he experienced during guard duty and to the bright sunlight to which he was later exposed during his time in Louisiana. He continued to paint, but later had to ask his models to identify colors for him.

In 1926, while working in an oil field, a chip hit Post in his left eye. A massive infection developed, and Post allowed doctors remove his left eye in the hope that the infection would recede. It did. With only one eye, he trained himself to judge distances by the height of telephone poles and two-story buildings. He and Will Rogers were killed in a crash at Barrow, Alaska.
