Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Tracy born?

Answer: Milwaukee,Wisconsin

He had a troubled childhood, going to six different high schools in Wisconsin and Kansas during a five-year span.
2. How many Oscar nominations did Tracy receive when he was ALIVE?

Answer: eight

Tracy received his first nomination for "San Francisco"(1936). Then Tracy won the Oscar the next two years for "Captains Courageous and Boys Town". Tracy didn't receive an Oscar nomination for the next twelve years until he teamed up with Elizabeth Taylor for "Father Of the Bride in 1950. That was the first of his three nominated performances in the 1950s.

The others were "Bad Day At Black Rock"(1955) and "The Old Man The Sea"(1958). He received his next nomination in 1960 for "Inherit The WInd".

The very next year Tracy lost out to his co-star Maximilian Schell for "Judgement At Nuremburg". He earned his ninth and final nomination when he was six feet under for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" in 1967. He died a few weeks after filming was completed.
3. Which of these Oscar-winning actresses did Tracy never work with?

Answer: Jane Fonda

He worked with Taylor in the original "Father Of The Bride", Tierney in "Plymouth Adventure" and Thelma Ritter in the epic "How The West Was Won" released in 1963. Thirty-year old Fonda was still an inexperienced actress living off her father Henry's name when Tracy was winding down his long career.
4. In which movie did Tracy make his feature film debut?

Answer: Up The River

This was an obscure film made in 1930 but this prison comedy had a young John Ford directing the film and a promising young actor by the name of Humphrey Bogart also making his feature film debut.
5. Tracy received Oscar nominations for each of these following films except one. Which one is it?

Answer: How The West Was Won (1963)

It's pretty difficult to get a nod when you're solely the narrator of the film.
6. Tracy's relationship with Katharine Hepburn is pretty well known today but why didn't he ever marry her?

Answer: He was married.

Tracy wouldn't divorce his wife, actress Louise Treadwell because he was a strict Roman Catholic. Tracy and Treadwell remained married for forty-four years until his death.
7. Which child actor co-starred with him in "Boys Town"?

Answer: Mickey Rooney

Freddie Barthomolew starred beside him in "Captain Courageous" (1937), the year before "Boys Town" was released but the eighteen-year old Rooney is better remembered today as Tracy's co-star than Barthomolew.
8. Tracy starred in Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man And The Sea"?

Answer: True

This was one of the few movies where Tracy was in virtually every scene and he got a nomination for playing a Cuban fisherman (although he didn't have an accent like he did for his Oscar-winning role in "Captain Courageous") . The funny thing was that the person who hated the movie the most was Hemingway who didn't like Tracy's performance in the movie at all.
9. Which of these Oscar-winning actors did Tracy never work with?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Tracy was a participant in the movie with Fonda, Wayne and Stewart in "How The West Was Won" (although he wasn't in a single scene with any of them since he was the narrator). Surprisingly, the one actor that has a very similar style to Tracy is the only one that has never worked with him.
10. How old was Tracy when he passed away?

Answer: 67

He was born on 1900 and died in 1967. It's a miracle he lived that long considering his friendliness with the bottle.
