Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the show, Chris has a plumber over at her house to fix the kitchen sink. What does the plumber, Stan, thank her for?

Answer: giving him a chance because people don't think he is very good

Stan the plumber thanks Chris for giving him a chance because people don't think that he is very good. Chris told him she believes everyone deserves a chance. When it looks as if Stan succeeds in fixing the faucet, Chris says it takes a lot more than a few mistakes to make a person a failure.

However she has a chance to practice her philosophy when she notices the sink is flooding and the water won't turn off. Stan scrambles to fix it but ends up flooding the place.
2. The Little League baseball team, the Coyotes, arrive at Whit's End a little depressed. What do they tell Whit was the reason they lost the game?

Answer: Davy Holcomb kept causing disasters

Whit tells a person on the telephone he has to go serve a hungry pack of coyotes. At the customer's surprise, Whit explains it is the Little League baseball team. However when Whit turns his attention to the kids, they are very down about losing the game and blame it on one person, Davey. During the game Davey struck out three times, knocked over the portable backstop, cleated his own second baseman, and the entire team tripped over him when he bent down to tie his shoe.

They blame Davy for the lost game and all the disasters.

Their teasing is so bad, Davy decides to quit the team.
3. Whit leads Davy around the shop and shows him the different displays. Davy is amazed to find out Whit is an inventor. What does Whit tell him is the basis of being an inventor?

Answer: "Find an idea and figure out how to make it work."

Whit takes Davy around and tells him that the displays are for kids to discover things. Some of the things were his inventions. Davy is shocked to find out Whit is an inventor. Whit laughs and tells Davy all you have to do to be an inventor is find an idea and figure out how to make it work.

He shows Davy the special place called "Inventor's Corner" in Whit's End and his private workshop.
4. Whit brings out an invention called "Whit's Flop". He asks Davy to poke around with it while the other kids watch. Whit is excited as Davy explores, but what disaster happens when Davy pulls a lever?

Answer: The lever breaks off in his hand

Whit asks Davy for help with his machine and brings it out for the kids to see. Whit calls it "Whit's Flop" because the machine never worked. He invites the kids to guess what it was supposed to be. Whit is excited as Davy begins to explore the machine and Davy becomes encouraged.

However when he pulls a lever and it breaks off in his hands, the kids tease him once more for being a failure. Davy runs outside believing that he cannot do anything right, but Whit follows him.
5. Things are not what they seem at first. When Whit asks the kids at Whit's End to explore his invention, what does Davy discover "Whit's Flop" was originally supposed to be?

Answer: a photocopy machine

After Davy runs away, Whit follows him to talk. Davy is convinced he can not do anything right and tells Whit that he has tried. When Davy does not want to mess around anymore with the invention, Whit asks Davy to at least repair what he had damaged. Davy tells Whit that it is pointless because he has seen photocopy machines that needed more parts that what Whit's Flop had to work. Whit becomes excited when he realizes Davy now knows what the machine is supposed to do.

He convinces Davy to try again.
6. Whit is not content to let Davy give up trying. Why does Whit tell Davy he cannot run from his problems?

Answer: Davy needs to have responsibility.

Whit follows Davy and asks him what he is going to do about the broken machine.
Davy tells him that he plans to just stay out of everyone's way that way he can't cause problems. He asks Whit, "Haven't I done enough already?" Whit tells him no. Whit tells Davy he needs to at least try to fix the part he broke. Whit tells Davy he cant go through life running away from his problems, he has to face them, and accept the consequences. He tells Davy that is responsibility.
7. Whit encourages Davy as he works on the machine. Finally when Davy is ready, they try to show the kids at Whit's End how it works. However what happens to Davy's machine when he tries to demonstrate it?

Answer: The machine lets off a spark of electricity that scares the kids.

The kids are reluctant because they know Davy's track record of making mistakes. Two of them start to tease Davy that they may need to run for their lives. They almost do when Davy flips the switch and the machine lets off a spark of electricity. Davy runs away and Whit has to go find him.

Whit tries to explain to Davy later that the electric shock was not his fault. Tom Riley had turned on the garbage disposal system the same time Davy flipped the switch. The result was a blown fuse. Whit changed the fuse, but by then Davy had made up his mind that he was quitting.
8. According to Whit, how many materials did Thomas Edison have to try, before he finally found one that worked for the light bulb?

Answer: more than 1,000

Whit told Davy that Thomas Edison tried more than a thousand materials to invent the light bulb. He told Davy that he believed somewhere along the process, Thomas Edison's assistant said, "Look 500 failed experiments and we haven't learned a thing!" Whit imagined Thomas Edison replied, "Sure we have, we just found out a 500 ways that don't work."

Whit explains to Davy that some things take time. He reminds Davy of the Bible scripture, Romans 8:28, "All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose."
9. Whit explains to Davy that there was nothing wrong with the machine, it had just been a faulty fuse that went off. How does Davy discover his machine has worked?

Answer: The kids start thanking him for pizza.

While Davy is talking to Whit, the kids who were previously making fun of him start coming past them, telling Davy thanks for the great pizza! Davy realizes that his transformation of the photocopy machine to a pizza oven has worked. He starts telling Whit maybe he should start making bigger plans for frozen pizzas, a restraint, maybe a franchise! Then when Davy trips, he reconsiders the ideas and Whit laughs.
10. At the end of the program, Chris goes back to telling her plumber about a man that had many failures, but in the end succeeded. The man dropped out of school, failed at being a soldier, and then failed at politics. Who is he?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Chris tells her plumber that there is a positive side to failure. She continues to tell him about a man that had many failures, but kept trying in spite of it.

He dropped out of school because he didn't like to study. He tried to be a soldier but couldn't succeed in teaching his men how to march.
Afterwards he tried to run for politics, but only succeeded because the other person campaigning had more troubles than he did.

Stan tells Chris, that this guy must have had rocks in his head. He is surprised when Chris tells him that the man is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln in spite of his failures became President of the United States. He helped lead the states during the difficult years of the Civil War and because of his encouragement to the nation, the United States did not break apart into two separate nations. He is one of the most famous Presidents of the United States of America, and one of the most quoted.
