Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Vodka martini, shaken, not stirred" is one of the most legendary movie catchphrases . Which impeccable dresser and secret agent man orders his drink with this phrase?

Answer: James Bond

"Dry Vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred" is ordered in almost all the Bond movies by all the actors who have portrayed him. In "Casino Royale", at the casino scene with Le Chiffre, Bond orders a variation of the usual vodka martini, "Three measures of Gordon's; one of vodka; half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it over ice, and add a thin slice of lemon peel" which is named the "Vesper" after Vesper Lynd, the female character in both the book and movie.

As much as he enjoys his martinis, James Bond has a fondness for other drinks, namely bourbon and "Bollinger" and "Dom Perignon" champagnes.

In one rare occasion, he's seen drinking a beer with CIA man Felix Leiter.
2. Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec's painting "La Buveuse" (The Drinker, also, The Hangover), shows a young woman sitting at a table in front of a glass and a bottle of red wine. The woman is identified as Suzanne Valadon, a painter herself and a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. Before she became a painter, Valadon had a short career as an entertainer. What was she?

Answer: Circus acrobat

Marie-Clémentine Valadon (Suzanne was given to her by Toulouse-Lautrec) grew up in extreme poverty and started working at 11 as a milliner's assistant, a funeral wreath maker and a vegetable vendor until she joined the circus as a trapeze artist. A fall from the trapeze ended her career and she became a model for the painters of Monmartre.

She had brief affairs with many of them and became a rather successful painter by observing and studying her employers. She was the mother of painter Maurice Utrillo.
3. Tommy Gavin (Dennis Leary) walks into a bar and orders "8 fingers of the best Irish whiskey", worth at least 100 dollars when he only has two dollars and seventy five cents in his pocket. The bartender pours him a glassful which Tommy downs in gigantic gulps. Which New York based TV series is the scene from?

Answer: Rescue Me

In "Rescue Me", Tommy Gavin is a New York city firefighter who has lost friends and family at 9/11. His professional and personal life is filled with poor choices, drunkenness, failed relationships, adultery and violence. For his alcoholism and his mess of a life, he blames his Irish descent, his loses, his bad luck, even God but never himself.

In the "8 fingers of Irish whiskey" scene he stoops so low that he uses a sentimental speech about 9/11 to gain the bartender's sympathy and justify his drink.

A trully despicable character!
4. In the video game "Monkey Island", grog, the pirates' drink, was sold from vending machines at Stan's Used Ship Emporium. Was Acetone among the grog ingredients?

Answer: Yes

The caustic mixture of Kerosene, Propylene Glycol, Artificial Sweeteners, Sulfuric Acid, Rum, Acetone, Battery Acid, Red Dye#2, Scumm, Axle grease and/or Pepperoni was known to melt the mug it was served in, if not drunk soon enough. The drink came in variations such as Cherry Grog, Grog Classic, Diet Grog, Caffeine Free, Near Grog - a non alcoholic variant, and Lite Grog.
The video game "Monkey Island" was developed by LucasArt in 1990 and it was a series of five games which followed Guybrush Threepwood and his pathetic attempts in trying to become a notorious and feared Carribean pirate.
5. In the aria "Près des remparts de Séville" (near the ramparts of Seville), from Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", Carmen mentions a particular type of Spanish alcoholic drink. What is it?

Answer: Manzanilla

Carmen is a beautiful Gypsy woman who works at a tobacco factory and gets arrested for attacking another worker. In the aria, she is trying to seduce Don Jose, the soldier who is guarding her, and make him let her free. Her song is about wanting to visit her friend Lillas Pastia and dance and drink but it would be boring to go alone and needs a man to accompany her. If a man loves her, she will love him back.

Lyrics in French
"Près des remparts de Séville,
Chez mon ami, Lillas Pastia
J'irai danser la Séguedille
Et boire du Manzanilla."

Manzanilla is a very dry, pale sherry that smells like chamomile.
6. In 1953, Rudy Toombs wrote and Amos Milburn sang this blues song, called "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One ..." Which is the last drink?

Answer: Beer

The song, originally recorded as "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer", is one of many drinking blues songs recorded by Amos Milburn in the 1950s. It tells the story of a man, abandoned by his girlfriend, who sits at a bar and pleads with the bartender for one more drink before closing.

"One more nip and make it strong
I got to find my baby and drive her home [if it takes all night long]
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer"

The song was covered by John Lee Hooker and George Thorogood as "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and it was made even more popular.
7. Sisters Abigail and Amelia Gabble rescue poor uncle Waldo just before he becomes "Prime Country Goose a la Provencale", stuffed with chestnuts and basted in white wine. Which Walt Disney animated movie are the characters from?

Answer: The Aristocats

Abigail and Amelia Gabble travel with Duchess and her kittens and Thomas O' Malley on their way back to Paris, when they encounter their uncle Waldo, tipsy and with his beautiful tail feathers gone. He was supposed to be the specialty of the day at a Parisian bistrot, a fate which he escaped at the last minute, rather intoxicated from basting in white wine. Being British himself, he makes a joke that he'd prefer basting in sherry.
8. Eugene O' Neill wrote a play about the Tyrone family whose four members are sinking into addictions and dysfunctional relationships. What is the name of the O' Neill play?

Answer: Long Day's Journey Into Night

The play takes place at the Tyrone seaside home during a single day. The three male members of the Tyrone family are addicted to alcohol while the mother is addicted to morphine. The family is barely balancing amidst old wounds and regrets, feelings of failure and resentment and underlying love and affection. Considered as Eugene O' Neill's finest work "Long Day's Journey Into Night" is based on the author's own family relationships and his home in Monte Cristo Cottage.
9. Dorothy: "Why do you drink so much?" Julie: "Because it's not fattening and it's not good for you. How many things can you say that about?" Which 1982 brilliantly hilarious movie are the lines from?

Answer: Tootsie

Julie (Jessica Lange) invites Dorothy (Dustin Hoffman) to her apartment to study the script of the soap opera episode they are both in. She opens a bottle of white wine and keeps filling her glass. Dorothy, Michael in reality since Dorothy is impersonated by a man, has already begun to become attracted to Julie and asks her about her drinking which is partly caused by her unhappy relationship with their director Ron.
10. American rock star's Marilyn Manson's love for absinthe led him to develop his own brand of the product and sell high quality absinthe under the brandname "Mansinthe".

Answer: True

Marilyn Manson became a lover of the "Green Fairy" (La fée verte) when he explored the 19th century Paris Decadence scene and the Weimar era "Degenerate" art, both associated strongly with the consumption of absinthe. Marilyn Manson started producing and selling his own line of the drink, "Mansinthe" which, according to the bottle, is "a high quality spirit distilled from grand wormwood, anise, fennel and other fine herbs" with 66.6% alcohol. Other notable lovers of absinthe were artists and poets such as Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Charles Baudelaire, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Oscar Wilde and Marcel Proust.
