"Addams Family" Characters: Lurch Quiz

Answer: "You rang?"

Lurch is mostly a silent character and he was intended to be so. However Ted Cassidy who plays Lurch in the 1960s TV series, ad libbed the line "you rang?" and it became a staple from that point forward. Although the line is considered iconic, Lurch does not always say it in some adaptations, especially since he is completely silent in some of them.

When Lurch does speak, he usually speaks in simple sentences or just one or two words at a time.

Answer: Cooking

Lurch is almost never seen doing the cooking. Depending on the version, that task usually falls to Morticia or Grandmama. Lurch is the family chauffeur and can often be seen transporting the Addamses around in their classic, outdated vehicles. His most common task is answering the door to guests and unintentionally scaring them with his spooky appearance.

He also dusts the mansion, which in his case means spreading the dust around rather than clearing it away.

Answer: Beard

In his debut comic appearance alongside Morticia, Lurch has a very different look than what we are used to. He remains a tall, strapping man but far less monstrous in appearance. He is much more human-like with a beard and a long, messy hairstyle. He no longer looks like a Frankenstein's monster.

This is the only time Lurch looks like this and in subsequent comics, he resembles his usual lankier, creepier self.

Answer: She's a normal

In this classic episode, Lurch's mother comes for a visit but Lurch lied to her and said he was the master of the house and not merely a butler. Gomez and Morticia decide to help him out by becoming servants and letting Lurch rule the roost. However Lurch and his mother becoming overbearing. Mother Lurch, as she is called, is a normal but unlike other normals, doesn't seem to think there is anything unusual about the eeriness of the house or the people who live there. Because his mother is called Mother Lurch, it is implied Lurch is the butler's last name.

Answer: A tree

Although Lurch is the butler, he is generally considered part of the family. So when the Addamses are removed their house, Lurch goes with them rather than stay behind. When the family is given a chance to remove their personal items, Lurch takes an entire tree with him, a tree that he has ripped out of the ground roots and all.

Answer: Cannonball

Wednesday and Pugsley "play" with their baby brother Pubert by dropping both him and a cannonball off of the roof of the mansion to see which will hit the ground first and which will bounce. Gomez catches Pubert but the cannonball lands on Lurch's head, the impact of which does not even phase Lurch in the least bit.

Answer: Blue

In the animated series from the 1990s, Lurch has blue skin which makes him stand out quite a bit from the other Addamses. In the 1970s animated series and the 2019 animated film, Lurch had sickly green skin more akin to a Frankenstein's monster. This incarnation of Lurch depicts him as particularly strapping and hulking with huge muscles.

Answer: Move Toward the Darkness

Like in many adaptations, Lurch is mostly silent in the Broadway musical except for a few groans. However, he shocks the family (and the audience) by having a melodious singing voice. He sings part of "Move Toward the Darkness" which is the final song of the play.

Answer: They found him outside an insane asylum

After Gomez and Morticia flee their home country after the townspeople turn on them, they move to New Jersey. They decide to move into an abandoned asylum for the clinically insane where they find Lurch left behind in a straightjacket. Gomez and Morticia like Lurch's attitude and style so hire him to be their butler, a position he remains in for many years to come.

Answer: Library

Unlike other members of the Addams Family, Lurch does not have to be "rescued". He is simply encountered in the library. Gomez must present Lurch with different music manuscripts and when Lurch plays these songs on the harpsichord, different areas of the house will open. Gomez needs to do this to access both the lake in the backyard and the treasury.
