Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Al (TV show)
Answer: Calavicci
From "Quantum Leap", Rear Admiral Al Calavicci is the 'project observer' who appears as a hologram to Sam Beckett, as Sam travels through time "putting things right that once went wrong". Sam was played by Scott Bakula and Al was Dean Stockwell. The show aired from 1989 to 1993 (in regular time).
2. Anne (a novel)
Answer: Shirley
Anne Shirley is the protagonist in "Anne of Green Gables", a 1901 novel by L.M. Montgomery, set in Canada on Prince Edward Island. Middle-age siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert want to adopt a boy to help with farm chores; instead they mistakenly receive Anne, an eleven year old orphan girl. Anne is a bright, imaginative girl whose adventures we follow from tween through young adult.
3. Pavel (TV show)
Answer: Chekov
In the second season of the original "Star Trek" (1966-1969), we are first introduced to Russian crewman and navigator Pavel Andreievich Chekov, played by Walter Koenig. Chekov wore a yellow shirt and could be found on the bridge, adjacent to Sulu. Although Chekov probably had the least dialogue of the protagonists, he often commented about "nuclear wessels".
4. Sandy (movie)
Answer: Olsson
"Grease is the word" and "Grease" is the 1978 film about high school teenagers in California in 1959. Set at Rydell High, the musical features 'greaser' Danny Zuko and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson, and how they became "Hopelessly Devoted..." John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John portray the couple.
5. Henry (novel)
Answer: Jekyll
Robert Louis Stevenson gave us the scary 1886 novel, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Dr. Henry Jekyll is a well-respected man of means who finds himself constantly battling against his evil and lustful urges. In an attempt to deny these urges, he invents a serum which turns out to have the opposite effect, i.e., he turns into Edward Jekyll, a violent, murderous creature, and the good doctor's worst nightmare.
6. Daphne (cartoon)
Answer: Blake
One of the occupants of the Mystery Machine, Daphne Blake can be found on the original animated program "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?". This cartoon ran from 1969 to 1970, but continues to have subsequent iterations to this day. The premise involves four teenagers (Daphne, Fred, Velma and Shaggy) and their Great Dane riding around the country solving crimes.
7. Angus (TV show)
Answer: MacGyver
Did you know that "MacGyver" actually had a first name, i.e., Angus? The original show ran from 1985 to 1992 and featured Richard Dean Anderson as a secret agent who never carries a gun but, rather, uses his scientific knowledge to create amazing devices out of the most mundane materials. In 2016 the show was rebooted but, for me, nothing will ever replace the original.
8. Leia (movie)
Answer: Organa
Unless you are from "a galaxy far far away", you will probably remember Princess Leia Organa from "Star Wars". As fans of the franchise already know, Princess Leia from Alderaan was an agent of the Rebel Alliance determined to destroy the Empire. From the original 1977 film through "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" in 2017, Carrie Fisher embodied the tough, spirited Leia until the end.
9. Yuri (novel)
Answer: Zhivago
"Dr. Zhivago", a novel by Boris Pasternak, was first published in 1957. The story is set in Russia and begins in 1902 at the funeral of Yuri Zhivago's mother. Yuri, having been abandoned by his father, goes to live with his maternal uncle, becomes a physician and falls in love with the beautiful Lara Antipova. In 1958, Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
10. Dorothy (Novel and film)
Answer: Gale
Most everyone has heard of Dorothy, the protagonist from L. Frank Baum's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" published in 1900, and the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz", starring Judy Garland. What you may not know is that the original book, beloved by children everywhere, may have been written as a political allegory. Dorothy's surname is Gale, somewhat ironic considering the cyclone to follow.
