Thing is typically portrayed as a right hand; however, there are few incidents where Thing has been a left hand (or arm). Because of the advancements in special effects, Thing was able to leave his box and become a free-roaming hand. In most prior media including animated features, Thing was a forearm who lived in a box. However, special effects technology for the 1991 film, allowed filmmakers to have Thing become a disembodied hand who walked like a spider.

This has been his depiction ever since. In the 1991 film and its sequel, Thing was portrayed by magician Christopher Hart.

Thing apparently has the ability to perform many actions, he logically should not be able to perform. Because he cannot speak, Thing typically communicates with the family by either snapping his fingers or Morse code (according to Gomez he has a stutter).

In the climax of "The Addams Family Values", Thing rescues Uncle Fester from his murderous new wife Debbie when she tries to blow up their mansion. Thing recklessly drives Fester back to the Addams Family Mansion.

Thing typically plays minor roles in "The Addams Family" video games with him mostly being designated to providing clues. However the in the 1992 game, Gomez must rescue Thing like all the other members of his family. Rescuing Thing is relatively easy compared to the others as Thing is found in the study and requires no special task to free.

Afterward, Thing will grant Gomez immunity for a short while when called upon. However, he can only be called three times per game.

In the 1992 animated children's series, Thing was often the victim of kidnapping or attempted kidnapping (or handnapping). Thing was once kidnapped by thieves who wanted to enter the vault Thing was guarding. In another episode, a man who lost his hand wanted to use Thing as a replacement.

Thing is missing from the musical as the logistics of having the character would be difficult in front of a live audience. In addition, Thing is never alluded to at all during the musical. During tours of the musical, a hand, presumed to be Thing, is sometimes used to pull open the curtain at the beginning of the second act.
