The valley was initially founded by a lost man, who stumbled on the valley and survived because it was an oasis. Underground aquifers created a fertile area, and it was named 'The Meadows' in Spanish.

Answer: Joshua

The Joshua is the only tree endemic to the area. The palm trees along the strip and around the city have been imported. The Joshua is a tree with spiny clumps of green needles on the end.

Answer: Military cartographer

While southern Nevada and the Las Vegas Valley wasn't discovered by John Fremont, he explored the area and produced complete maps of the area after just two visits.

Interestingly enough, the Plaza, which stands at the end of Fremont street and looks down Glitter Gultch, faces the old railroad yard in the back and downtown in the front. It looks back on the past and the history of how the city came to be, and forward on what became of Las Vegas.

Known then as Highway 91, The El Rancho was built on the road leading to Fremont Street. Prior to this, Fremont Street was the center of the action in Las Vegas. The El Rancho, however, was very successful, as there was plenty of room to build, plenty of parking, and it was built just outside of the city boundaries. This way, it was not subjected to as strict restrictions or taxes.

Benjamin Siegel (he hated the name Bugsy) built the Flamingo, in hopes of building the grandest hotel in the world. Unfortunately, construction went way overbudget, he and his girlfriend were stealing money from the operation, and the hotel was a financial flop. He was shot by his fellow gangsters.
10. Who was the eccentric billionaire that purchased the Desert Inn in 1966?

Answer: Howard Hughes

The man supposedly bought the hotel from Moe Dalitz for 13 million dollars. Hughes had been living in the hotel for some time, and occupied an entire floor. Dalitz wanted the rooms freed up for his high-rolling guests. Hughes did not want to leave, so he bought the hotel!

Wynn built the Mirage, at a cost of about 700 million dollars, in 1989. The hotel started a building boom of other theme hotels, like the Excalibur and Luxor. In 1993, Wynn built Treasure Island next to the Mirage.

In 1966, Jay Sarno built Caesar's Palace, and in 1968, with the success of Caesar's, built Circus Circus. The early Circus Circus flopped, because Sarno treated it like a real circus - there was an admission charge, and people had to pay to enter the facility, and therefore the casino!
