Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To start off, who breaks his golden sickle, necessitating the quest for a new one?

Answer: Panoramix, the druid

Panoramix, rousing the village with his gros mots (a lot of swearing), breaks his own golden sickle on the second page of the album. He must have a new golden sickle because only mistletoe cut with one will have magic powers. He can't go to an upcoming druid convention without it.
2. Yes or no. Does Idéfix, the loyal dog, accompany our heroes on their quest?

Answer: No

No, this album takes place before 'Le Tour de Gaule,' in which Obélix first encounters (and adopts) Idéfix. He is therefore not present.
3. To what city do Astérix and Obélix go in search of another golden sickle?

Answer: Lutèce

Panoramix says, "The best, the only ones which I accept are those made by the renowned Amérix, in far-away Lutèce..." Rather picky, I should think.
4. What does Obélix bring his cousin Amérix, the sickle-maker, as a gift?

Answer: a menhir

Yes, menhirs are one thing he has a lot of. "Little gifts maintain a friendship," Obélix says. For him, a menhir is a little gift. Also, four boars is a little snack.
5. What's in the forest (the future Bois de Boulogne) that everyone (except our heroes) is so scared of?

Answer: wolves and bandits

Our heroes aren't afraid of anything. "We Gauls do not know the meaning of fear!" (Though a terrified Gaulish wood-gatherer begs to differ.) They do meet both wolves and a bandit --- the wolves have chased the bandit up a tree. They rescue him, but even he doesn't want to go deeper in the forest. "I may be a bandit, but I'm not crazy!"
6. Where is the rendez-vous site for the sickle traffickers?

Answer: a dolmen

Lutèce only has one dolmen (a menhir laid horizontally over two upright menhirs at each end). "The poor people," sighs Obélix sadly, who really is quite fond of menhirs. The dolmen marks a trap door to an underground passage...
7. Who is the mastermind behind the sickle trafficking ring?

Answer: Gracchus Pleindastus, the prefect

To everyone's surprise, the eternally bored prefect has been masterminding the sickle-smuggling all along. When he's caught, he admits it all willingly and looks forward to the excitement of being thrown to the lions ("That'll be fun!"). You see? This is what decadence leads to.
8. Where do our heroes finally find Amérix?

Answer: chained in a cellar

The prefect has had Amérix kidnapped and keeps him on ice in the cellar, making sickles for the black market.
9. "Roasted or seasoned with salt, boar is my favorite dish!" Who says this?

Answer: Obélix

If you've read any Astérix albums, this is a freebie. Obélix loves le sanglier (wild boar). A common gag in the albums: both our heroes enter an inn. Asterix says, "Two boars!" And Obélix says, "Two boars for me too!"
10. When Astérix is in a cell with chains around his arms, unable to reach his gourd of magic potion, who frees him?

Answer: his drunken cell-mate

The drunk is hard to convince and threatens to sulk. Astérix, ever the clever one, promises him a taste if he'll give Astérix a drink from his gourd of magic potion. He does, and then goes on his merry, drunken, super-powered way. Well, c'est le fin. I hope you enjoyed taking the quiz as much as I enjoyed reading the album. And if it inspired you to go back and re-read the adventures, all the better.

A bientot!
