Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edward Asner (news director Lou Grant) made history in 1977, when he took his character from the comedy of WJM-TV in Minneapolis to the more serious Los Angeles Tribune. How many times did Asner win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on "Lou Grant"?

Answer: 2

Edward Asner won a total of five Emmy Awards for playing the character of Lou Grant. Three of those were earned as Outstanding Supporting Actor (1971, 1972 and 1975) while he was on "Mary Tyler Moore". The other two (1978, 1980) were earned while playing on "Lou Grant".

The series, which ran from 1977 to 1982, is notable because it was the first dramatic spinoff of a sitcom in U.S. television history.
2. Betty White (homemaking-show host Sue Ann Nivens) has also won a number of Emmy Awards for her work in television. One of those awards came in 1983, when she won a Daytime Emmy for hosting which game show?

Answer: "Just Men!"

Created by Rick Rosner, who is better known as the creator of "CHiPs", "Just Men!" featured two female contestants answering questions on the lifestyles of seven male celebrities. Whoever won the main game got a chance to win a car in the bonus round. White was the first woman to win the Daytime Emmy as a game-show host, which is fitting considering she was married to longtime "Password" host Allen Ludden, who she met on that show, for 18 years.
3. John Amos (weatherman Gordy Howard) is better known for playing James Evans, Sr., on the hit TV show "Good Times". But he also had a recurring role as Mayor Ethan Baker on which popular TV crime drama?

Answer: "The District"

Inspired by the work of deputy NYPD commissioner Jack Maple, "The District" starred veteran actor Craig T. Nelson, best known for his work on the hit show "Coach", as the head of Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. The show wasn't Amos's first exposure to playing in police dramas.

He appeared as Captain Dolan, boss of Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer), during the first season of "Hunter".
4. Gavin MacLeod (news writer Murray Slaughter) struck gold after "Mary Tyler Moore", when he signed on to play Captain Merrill Stubing on "The Love Boat" for nearly a decade. But he got his first starring role on which 1960s-vintage show?

Answer: "McHale's Navy"

Gavin MacLeod was involved as a regular on three hit shows within a span of a quarter-century. On "McHale's Navy", MacLeod shared screen time with Academy Award-winner Ernest Borgnine, future "Carol Burnett Show" standout Tim Conway, and character actor Bill Quinn, who would play Mary Richards's dad on "Mary Tyler Moore".

He received three Golden Globe Award nominations for playing Murray Slaughter on "Mary Tyler Moore" and two more nominations for playing Merrill Stubing on "The Love Boat."
5. Ted Knight (news anchor Ted Baxter) became a familiar voice for animated TV shows while working on "Mary Tyler Moore". Which of the following cartoons did Knight NOT provide a voice for during "Mary Tyler Moore's" run from 1970 to 1977?

Answer: "Aquaman"

Ted Knight did work on "The Superman/Aquaman Hour" in 1967--three years before he joined the "Mary Tyler Moore" cast. The Aquaman portion of the show was repackaged to become a show in its own right the next year. Knight's work as the narrator on "Super Friends" included the classic line, "Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice..." Knight's biggest success after "Mary Tyler Moore", though, came when he played cartoonist Henry Rush on the sitcom "Too Close For Comfort".
6. Cloris Leachman (Mary's landlord Phyllis Lindstrom) starred on the "Mary Tyler Moore" spinoff, "Phyllis", from 1975 to 1977. On that show, Phyllis returned to her hometown of San Francisco after which event?

Answer: The death of her husband.

Phyllis's doctor husband, Lars, was often referred to but never seen on screen. After his death, Phyllis and her daughter Bess (played by Lisa Gerritsen) moved back to San Francisco to live with Lars's mother and step-father. In the two seasons that "Phyllis" ran, the character worked in a photography studio and as an administrative assistant to a member of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors. Leachman won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Phyllis on "Mary Tyler Moore" in 1974 and a Golden Globe Award for her work on "Phyllis" in 1976. Later in her career, she replaced Charlotte Rae as the star of the popular sitcom, "The Facts of Life."
7. Valerie Harper (window dresser Rhoda Morganstern) also had a spinoff of her own, "Rhoda", from 1974 to 1978. But she was also involved in a hotly-contested race for the presidency of the Screen Actors Guild in 2001. To whom did Harper lose that headline-making race?

Answer: Melissa Gilbert

Valerie Harper won a total of four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for playing Rhoda Morganstern on both "Mary Tyler Moore" and "Rhoda". She also starred in "Valerie", a modest hit on NBC, but her involvement with that show lasted just one season. Lorimar fired her during a contract dispute, and Sandy Duncan took over as the star of the show, which was renamed "Valerie's Family" and later "The Hogan Family". Gilbert and Harper were engaged in a race to succeed Emmy Award-winning actor William Daniels as SAG president.
8. Georgia Engel (Ted Baxter's wife, Georgette) enjoyed a number of recurring roles on television after "Mary Tyler Moore" ended in 1977. On which of the following shows was Engel NOT play a recurring character.

Answer: "Night Court"

A graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Georgia Engel received two Emmy Award nominations for her work as Georgette Franklin Baxter on "Mary Tyler Moore." She also received three more Emmy nominations for playing Pat McDougall, the mother-in-law of Robert Barone (played by Brad Garrett) on the hit show "Everybody Loves Raymond." Engel had starring roles on "The Betty White Show", which ran on CBS during the 1977-78 season, and "Jennifer Slept Here," which ran on NBC during the 1983-84 season.
9. Joyce Bulifant (Murray Slaughter's wife, Marie) had a number of TV roles throughout her career. But it is the one that got away that she may be best remembered for. What classic sitcom was Builfant cast for, but ultimately passed over for, in the late 1960s?

Answer: "The Brady Bunch"

Joyce Bulifant was tagged to play Carol Brady on what would become the hit show "The Brady Bunch". But the producers decided to go with Florence Henderson instead. Despite that setback, Bulifant was a regular on shows like "The Bill Cosby Show", "Big John, Little John" and "Flo". Off screen, Bulifant was married to two well-known names in the entertainment business--James MacArthur (Danny Williams on "Hawaii Five-O"), her first husband, from 1958 to 1967, and William Asher (her third husband, and former husband of "Bewitched" star Elizabeth Montgomery) from 1976 to 1993.
10. Although Mary Tyler Moore (news producer Mary Richards) did not star on another hit TV show after "Mary Tyler Moore" ended, she did run a production company that turned out a number of hits during the 1970s and 1980s. Which of the following shows was NOT produced by MTM Enterprises?

Answer: "Bosom Buddies"

MTM Enterprises had a number of critically-acclaimed and award-winning shows during its existence, from sitcoms like "WKRP in Cincinnati", "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Sparks" to dramas like "Paris", "St. Elsewhere", "The White Shadow". "Mary Tyler Moore" and its three spinoffs--"Lou Grant", "Phyllis" and "Rhoda"--were also produced by MTM Enterprises, which Moore ran with her husband, Grant Tinker. MTM Enterprises became part of News Corporation in 1998, and was eventually folded into 20th Century Fox Television. "Bosom Buddies", which starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as men living in a women's-only hotel, was a product of Paramount Television.
